Hon Hai to make high-end iPhones in India: report | Economics

Study shows disappointing demand for iPhone XR

Apple Inc. will reportedly start manufacturing some of its top-end iPhones in India, a move that could better insulate its supply chain against the trade dispute between the United States and China. It still remains to be seen whether less expensive iPhone X models will be the tipping point, however, by building the phones in India, Apple is at least doing everything it can to set itself up to try.

Apple's decision to move out of China in order to manufacture its high-end devices in India is undoubtedly the Cupertino-based company's measure to avoid the costs of producing its devices in China under the perspective of the growing trade war between the USA and China.

It should be noted that it's now unknown whether Foxconn is planning to move its existing iPhone assembly from China to India. Due to import taxes, an iPhone XS 64GB now costs $1421 Dollars in India!

The company was planning to invest US$356 million (NT$10.9 billion) and create an estimated 25,000 jobs, a Tamil Nadu government minister told Reuters. In the U.S., Xr's sales contributed 32 percent to the total iPhone sales while the combined sales of iPhone Xs and Xs Max contributed 35% to the total sale.

Foxconn already makes smartphones in India for the Chinese brand Xiaomi. An alternative for companies caught in the trade war crossfire is to up-sticks and manufacture in another country.

Foxconn, the world's biggest electronics contract manufacturer, is considering setting up a factory in Vietnam, Vietnamese state media reported this month. The American tech giant is looking to steer the business to a new level as far as the Indian market is concerned. The overall iPhone production in the fourth quarter of this year will reach 72 million units, lower than the previous forecast of 77 million units, mainly because the new iPhone demand is quite low.
