UN Official Wants Assessment Access After Border Patrol Child Deaths

Agustin Gomez took his son to the border after hearing rumors that parents and their children would be allowed to migrate to United States, according to the boy's stepsister, who spoke on Wednesday, two days after his death.

Under U.S. law, families from countries that do not border the United States cannot be immediately deported, and because of a longstanding legal settlement, there are restrictions on how long U.S. authorities can detain migrant children.

There's no doubt that the death of a child in US custody at any time is cause for concern and that two deaths raise the possibility that there is a problem that needs to be addressed.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the boy displayed signs of illness Monday and was taken with his father to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a cold and a fever and prescribed amoxicillin and ibuprofen.

They were then taken to the Border Patrol's Alamogordo station on Sunday. That doesn't make his death any less of a tragedy, but it does suggest that if we're looking for systemic problems that create risks to Central American children we have to do a lot more than blame the border officials who do their best when these kids finally stagger across the border.

They were given hot food, snacks, juice and water, and two days later, were transferred to the El Paso Border Patrol Station, the CBP said. But officials said they have asked the U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Defense and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for help.

An autopsy performed on the 8-year-old Guatemalan boy who died in us custody early Christmas Day shows he had influenza, New Mexico authorities said Thursday. Felipe was hospitalized Monday after a border agent noticed he was coughing.

His sister said her father told her that Felipe had been playing that morning when he said his tummy hurt. While family units are typically released into the interior while they await asylum proceedings. He died on Christmas Eve on the way to the hospital, after having been treated at the hospital earlier in the day. They said they could pass with the children.

Felipe "always wanted a bicycle", and in the USA he wouldn't have to endure the poverty and lack of opportunity in Guatemala, she said. He lived in a one-room house in a rural farming area with Gomez Perez and his second wife, Catarina Alonzo, 32, who speaks only the Mayan language Chuj.

Jakelin Caal's family disputed some of the government's claims about what happened leading up to her death, saying the girl was healthy and had no pre-existing conditions when she and her father made the journey from Guatemala.

Now the head of Customs and Border Protection is reiterating calls for Congress to provide more funding to handle the influx of migrants crossing the border.

DHS Secretary Kristjen Nielsen released a statement Wednesday.

About 7 p.m., while they were being held at a highway checkpoint on Route 70, Felipe vomited, officials said. He says the agency is seeing more children than ever in its custody.

CBP has said it took several hours to transport Jakelin and her father from a remote Border Patrol facility to a larger station, where her temperature was measured at 40.9 C. Emergency medical technicians had to revive her twice.

Government officials did not comment on why exactly they think the father denied further treatment for his child, despite him exhibiting more severe symptoms.

"[Felipe] always wanted a bicycle", she said.
