Thailand Legalizes Medical Marijuana As New Year’s ‘Gift’

Thailand legalizes medicinal marijuana in New Year's 'gift'

Thailand's interim parliament voted to approve marijuana for medical use and research, one of the senators who worked on the bill told CNN on Tuesday. In a 166 to 0 vote, the National Legislative Assembly approved regulations that would let citizens use cannabis under medical supervision, and is expected to be implemented next year.

Purveyors, producers and researchers will need licenses to handle the drugs, while end-users will need prescriptions. Canada and Columbia have legalised the drug for medical and recreational use.

The move positions Thailand as the first Southeast Asian country to legalize cannabis use, which is significant, as the region maintains some of the harshest drug laws in the world.

Besides cannabis, kratom or known as ketum in Malaysia has also been given the green light for medical usage.

As for India, under Section 20 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cultivation, possession, use, sale/purchase, import/export, transportation and warehousing of cannabis.

"We're going to demand that the government revoke all these requests before the law takes effect", Panthep Puapongpan, dean of the Rangsit Institute of Integrative Medicine and Anti-Aging, was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.

Do you think more countries should legalize medical marijuana? He added that the amended legislation will allow for more opportunities to help patients suffering from chronic illness.
