Musk's SpaceX successfully deploys US GPS satellite into orbit

Thus, Elon Musk made it the first ever mission of security for USA government.

Heather Wilson, secretary of the Air Force, says this next-generation Global Positioning System satellite is three times more accurate than previous versions and eight times better at anti-jamming.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, scheduled to launch a U.S. Air Force navigation satellite, sits on Launch Complex 40 after the launch was postponed after an abort procedure was triggered by the onboard flight computer, at Cape Canaveral, Florida, U.S., December 18, 2018.

The Falcon 9 in question's first stage did not re-attempt landing, as the payload was too heavy and delivered too high into orbit for the rocket to meet performance requirements in its reusable configuration. Other attempts on Wednesday, Thursday and yesterday were also aborted due to similar problems and bad weather.

The network now features 31 operational satellites, which orbit about 12,550 miles (20,200 kilometers) above Earth.

Two hours later, SpaceX published an update on Twitter and confirmed that the GPS III SV01 satellite was successfully deployed to medium Earth orbit.

The next GPS III satellite is due to launch in mid-2019 and the subsequent satellites will undergo testing in the company's Colorado processing facility.

The next year, SpaceX won an $US83 million Air Force contract to launch the GPS III satellite, which will have a lifespan of 15 years. SpaceX's launch team, around 35 minutes before launch, approved the super-chilled kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants loading into the rocket.

The satellite, designated GPS III SV01, is the first of an entirely new design of GPS satellite which will help the Air Force modernize today's GPS constellation with new technology and advanced capabilities.

SpaceX was initially planning a total of 22 launches this year, thus missing its target by a very small margin. GPS IIIF builds off Lockheed Martin's existing modular GPS III, which was created to evolve with new technology and changing mission needs.
