Cabinet split laid bare as Leadsom insists managed no-deal Brexit is possible

Cabinet minister David Gauke has hinted that he would quit Theresa May's government if it allowed a no-deal Brexit to happen.

Mr Morawiecki said he hoped the Withdrawal Agreement would be adopted, saying it was the "best deal possible".

She added: "A managed no-deal does not necessarily mean there is no Withdrawal Agreement at all".

However, the "contingency action plan" published by the commission on Wednesday contains no such arrangement. The commission is urging member states to adopt a "generous" approach to their residency rights, but only "provided that this approach is reciprocated" by London in how it handles three million European Union citizens living in Britain.

The Commons vote was due to be held earlier this month but Theresa May postponed it, once it became clear it would be defeated by a large margin. It has been rescheduled for mid-January, but opposition remains strong across the political spectrum.

"Even if the Government did choose to push ahead with a no deal, I'm convinced that Parliament would stand in its way". It would take months and months, if not well over a year, simply to get the legislation through, by which time we would have left the EU. With that in mind, the government has been stepping up no-deal preparations - including asking supermarkets and drugmakers to stockpile goods and putting troops on standby.

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said his government ruled out changes to the wording of the withdrawal agreement, but said there could be "a political declaration coming from a European Council".

"Cabinet ministers and I have all been very clear that we are focusing on working on ensuring that we can get the deal that we've agreed with the European Union agreed and through parliament in the meaningful vote", she said.

"I would be very surprised if the prime minister would be prepared to go down that route".

The United Kingdom has also signed up to continued membership of the Common Transit Convention, which reduces administrative burden by removing the need for companies to complete import and export customs declarations when travelling through multiple countries.

"Ridiculous, absolutely", one resident, Tony Finney, said when asked about the delay, calling it a "fiasco".

The government has stepped up its no-deal planning.

"That avoids a cliff edge, that avoids uncertainty for businesses and travelers and so on".

The government said the exact salary threshold would be decided after public consultation.

Some 34,500 Swiss nationals live in the UK.

"Parliament has to reach a majority on how it is going to leave the EU".

But that has put her at odds with many business leaders.

Obtaining a permit to work in Switzerland depends on many factors, including where you are from, the skills you have and quotas.

The longer the political impasse drags on, the more anxious British businesses get.

Organizations including the British Chambers of Commerce and the Confederation of British Industry urged lawmakers to "return to their constituencies over Christmas and talk to their local business communities".
