USA gives Russian Federation 60 days to comply with nuclear treaty

Putin dismissed Pompeo's statement as a smokescreen, saying Washington had already made a decision to ditch the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty (INF).

In October, President Donald Trump sparked concern globally by declaring the United States would pull out of the deal and build up America's nuclear stockpile "until people come to their senses".

However they backed USA claims that Russian Federation has land-based nuclear missiles based in Europe.

The Russian President said: "Now it seems our American partners believe that the situation has changed so much that the United States must also have such a weapon".

The NATO chief said the alliance is also preparing a contingency plan in case the Kremlin fails to comply and the USA pulls out of the accord.

"What's our response? It's simple".

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington would no longer be bound by the 1987 Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty unless Moscow withdraws a new system that has threatened to trigger an arms race.

EU diplomacy chief Federica Mogherini, who met with Lavrov on the sidelines of the 25th OSCE Ministerial Council in Milan, addressed the issue, stating that the INF Treaty must be preserved as it is key to European and global security.

"We have achieved significant progress in laser weapons", Putin said at the time.

The US won strong backing for its position from the rest of the NATO allies, who said in a joint statement that it was "now up to Russian Federation to preserve the INF treaty".

In Brussels, EU diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini urged Russian Federation and the U.S. to save the treaty, warning that Europe did not want to become a battlefield for global powers once again, as it had been during the Cold War. European leaders have expressed concern that any collapse of the I-N-F treaty could lead to a new, destabilizing arms race between Russian Federation and the West.

His administration's move to set up a missile shield in Europe alarmed the Kremlin and was scrapped by the Obama administration in 2009.
