NASA InSight hears 'haunting low rumble' on Mars

InSight is designed to study the interior of Mars like never before using seismology instruments to detect quakes and a self-hammering mole to measure heat escape from the planet's crust

"In some sense, this is what it would sound like if you were sitting on the InSight lander on Mars", Cornell University's Don Banfield told reporters. Additionally, NASA reported that the winds were likely blowing from the northwest in the direction of the southeast, the way the streaks in the landing area seem to move as well.

InSight, which landed on 26 November 2018, will study the inside of Mars to learn how planets, moons and meteorites with rocky surfaces, including the Earth and its Moon, formed. In a few weeks, it will be placed on the Martian surface by InSight's robotic arm, then covered by a domed shield to protect it from wind and temperature changes. But this is the first time we've ever heard what Mars sounds like.

It was just a couple of weeks ago that NASA's shiny new InSight lander successfully touched down on the Red Planet, sending cheers throughout NASA and the scientific community as a whole. NASA shared two copies of the wind recording, one as it was captured and another adjusted for playback on phones and laptops.

You can hear the audio in the video above.

These vibrations were detected by an ultra-sensitive seismometer developed in the United Kingdom and an air pressure sensor sitting on the lander's deck.

Everything is debatable , what we have to do is give our best to be available and give our best when playing. There are three, two in LaLiga which are vital for us, and the other one comes in the Champions League .

NASA increased the pitch of the audio by two octaves for those who couldn't hear the original, and for those listening on a laptop or a phone.

It's been less than two weeks since InSight touched down on the surface of the Red Planet, but it is already sending back awesome things for us to marvel at. This sensor recorded the vibrations directly while the seismometer recorded the vibrations of the movement the wind caused in the solar panels.

This latest collection of images from the spacecraft's landing site at Elysium Planitia comprises 17 novel snapshots and was received by mission controllers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, on December 4 - or sol 8 of the InSight Mars mission.

"We're all still on a high from the landing last week. and here we are less than two weeks after landing, and we've already got some awesome new science", said NASA's Lori Glaze, acting director of planetary science. "The solar panels on the lander's sides respond to pressure fluctuations of the wind". It will also record the sound of the instrument's laser as it zaps different materials, helping to identify the material based on the sound it makes.
