Color of outrage: Yellow Vests rallies sweep across France and overseas

Crowds of yellow-vested protesters angry at President Emmanuel Macron and France's high taxes tried to march on the presidential palace Saturday, surrounded by exceptional numbers of police bracing for outbreaks of violence after the worst rioting in Paris in decades.

Authorities said some 8,000 people were demonstrating in Paris, where 600 people had been searched and briefly arrested.

Across France, 89,000 police officers will be on duty and armoured vehicles will be deployed in the capital, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced.

President Emmanuel Macron's government has warned that the protests will be hijacked by "radicalised and rebellious" crowds and become the most unsafe yet, after three weeks of demonstrations.

French authorities will close dozens of museums, tourism sites and shops on Saturday, including the Eiffel Tower and Louvre, fearing a recurrence of last week's violence in Paris, officials said on Thursday.

His morning tweet came in the middle of UN climate talks in Poland, where almost 200 nations have gathered to agree on a universal rulebook to make good on the promises they signed up to in the 2015 Paris climate deal.

Paris is on lockdown as armed police braced for another confrontation with "yellow vest" protestors in a fourth weekend of demonstrations over living costs.

Mr Macron, who has not spoken in public since he condemned last Saturday's disturbances while at the G20 summit in Argentina, will address the nation early next week, his office said.

In addition to the closure of the Eiffel Tower, many shops and museums across Paris, including the Louvre, the Orsay Museum and the Grand Palais, will keep their doors shut on Saturday for safety reasons.

Laurent Saint-Martin, a senior member of the ruling Republic On The Move (LREM) party, said around 40 of the students were masked and intent on carrying out vandalism and arson.

Some remain focused on lowering fuel taxes and other financial burdens, saying low-income families in particular are paying the price for Macron's push to reform and revive the French economy.

Meanwhile US President Donald Trump tweeted his comments on the protests in France. "Take care of Paris on Saturday because Paris belongs to all the French people".

Some could be held in the city centre on what is a major Christmas shopping weekend.

One of the voices of the Yellow Vests, Julien Terrier, was detained during a rally in the city of Grenoble in southeastern France, the local police prefecture confirmed.

Many protesters slammed the French media for portraying the protests as led by violent agitators and for siding with Macron's government.

Interior minister Christophe Castaner said Friday that 151 people were arrested in the small town, adding that some of them carried weapons.

He asked for peaceful protestors to not become mixed up with "hooligans".

Philippe on Friday evening met a delegation of self-described "moderate" yellow vests who urged people not to join the protests.

But the movement has no clear leaders, and past protests have attracted extremists who hurled projectiles at police.

"The troublemakers can only be effective when they disguise themselves as yellow vests".

Four people have been killed in accidents since the unrest began.

"People do not want to pay large sums of money, much to third world countries (that are questionably run), in order to maybe protect the environment".

French high school students take to the streets.

Macron, whose popularity is at a low ebb according to polls, has been forced into making the first major U-turn of his presidency by abandoning a fuel tax.
