Kendrick Lamar Received The Most 2019 Grammy Nominations

The nominations for the 2019 Grammy Awards were announced on Friday morning.

As with previous year, hip-hop dominated across the board - though in 2018, the Recording Academy fell under sharp criticism after rap mogul Jay-Z left empty-handed and Lamar was shut out of the general categories.

While male acts dominated the nominations in the main categories last year, five of this year's best album nominees are women, with Cardi B, Brandi Carlile, HER, Janelle Monae and Kacey Musgraves competing against Drake, Post Malone and the Black Panther soundtrack. Lamar's "All the Stars" is up for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Most notably, Scorpion was nominated for Album Of The Year, while "God's Plan" was nominated for Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year.

The Invasion of Privacy rapper woke up on Friday to a total of five nominations, making her and Lady Gaga the most nominated female artists at the 2019 Grammys.

In May, the head of the Recording Academy - which includes more than 13,000 music professionals - said he would step aside when his contract expires near year, amid outrage after he said women artists should "step up".

In the always confusing best new artist category - which isn't really about a "new" artist so much as one who may have been obscure for years before making a commercial impact - the nominees ranged from genuine newcomers to veteran road warriors who finally broke through. That's because her two Grammy nods a year ago disqualify her from a best new artist award.

Her saucy summer hit "I Like It" - which features Puerto Rican Latin trap artist Bad Bunny and Colombian reggaeton star J Balvin - is among those up for Record of the Year.

Yet Western Washington's humble Americana star found herself - deservedly so - nominated for a whopping six awards, trailing only King Kendrick (eight) and the "God's Plan" rapper (seven) who recently rocked the Tacoma Dome.

After leading nominations past year, however, Jay-Z and his pop queen wife Beyonce were left out of the top categories despite acclaim for their joint project "Everything is Love". But her chart-topping 2017 album, "Reputation", was snubbed other than a nomination for best pop vocal album.
