World's first baby born using uterus transplant from dead donor

Doctors hold a baby girl born to a mother who received a uterus from a deceased donor in Brazil. A novel transplantation procedure may help more infertile women become pregnant

This isn't the first baby born to a woman with a uterine transplant-several have been born in Sweden, the USA, and Brazil to women who received uterine transplants from live donors.

The Journal cites 10 previous cases of failed uterus transplants from deceased donors, in the United States, the Czech Republic and Turkey.

"Up till now it was not known that uterus can survive more than four hours out of a living body, however, the present case shows that the uterus is a quite strong an organ", Ms Sharma said. Removal of the donor organ also allowed the woman to stop taking immunosuppressant medication.

ABC News Chief Health and Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton, a practicing OB/GYN in Englewood, New Jersey, is optimistic about the breakthrough.

"This is a very important birth for the whole uterus transplant community", said Dr. Liza Johannesson, a uterus transplant surgeon at Baylor who previously worked with the Swedish research team.

Experts said using uteruses from women who have died could make more transplants possible. According to the authors of the case study, around one in 500 women have infertility associated with the womb. The possibility of successful pregnancies using deceased donors expands the possibilities for fertility.

The transplant took place in September of 2016.

Future recipients undergoing similar transplants would have to be fit and healthy to avoid complications, they said. The donated uterus was then removed from the patient after the birth.

"The successful case in our service brings hope to other centers that believe in this type of transplant", Ejzenberg said in an email to TIME.

It is estimated that between 10 to 15 percent of couples of reproductive age worldwide are affected by infertility.

Researchers reveal potentially huge cancer breakthrough: a 10-minute universal test
The position of these molecules forms part of the epigenome - a set of instructions that controls how genes are expressed. The technology has proven to be up to 90 per cent accurate in tests involving 200 human cancer samples and normal DNA.

"The first uterus transplants from live donors were a medical milestone", added Dr Ejzenberg.

Nearly exactly a year after the baby's historic birth, Ejzenberg says she is developing normally and her mother feels "fulfilled".

The patient was married for five years and suffered from congenital uterine absence, making it impossible for her to conceive naturally. This affects approximately 3 to 5 per cent of women, Dr. Tullius said, including those born without a uterus or those who have had hysterectomies for cancer-related reasons.

Uterus transplants have become more common in recent years, resulting in 11 live births around the world.

In the end, they held off an additional month after tests suggested the lining of the donor uterus wasn't quite thick enough to support implantation. Normal prenatal testing including blood sugar tests and ultrasounds were all done and returned without any abnormalities.

Doctor Andraus (far left) was the head transplant surgeon involved in the surgery to transplant the donated uterus.

"In an expanding field such as uterus transplantation, the role of collaborative networks and societies such as the International Society of Uterus Transplantation or new interest groups in already existing scientific societies will be crucial".

The recipient, who was not identified, gave birth at 35 weeks and three days by cesarean section.

The Brazilian researchers are planning two more uterus transplants as part of the study.
