Toddler with rare blood type sparks worldwide search for donor

Worldwide Donor Hunt to Help Girl with Rare Blood Type

A worldwide hunt is now underway to find a rare blood type to help a 2-year-old South Florida girl battling cancer.

In order to meet the said pre-requisites, the blood donation organisation has chose to expand its search across the globe with an aim to raise 7-10 donors to donate blood over the period of Zainab's treatment.

Donors need to be exclusively of Pakistani, Indian or Iranian descent, meaning both parents must be 100 percent of one of these ethnicities.

To be a donor, a person must have blood type A or O and they must be missing the same antigen - otherwise Zainab's body will reject the blood.

Florida-based OneBlood, a nonprofit blood center, has now been conducting an worldwide search to find compatible blood donors.

Complicating the matter: She has a rare blood type and finding a match for life-saving transfusions is a huge challenge.

So far, three donors have been located - one of whom lives in the United Kingdom.

Donors With 'Extremely Rare Blood' Sought for Florida Toddler Zainab, Who Has Neuroblastoma

According to The Miami Herald, the family's plight began two months ago after doctors discovered a tumor that had been growing undetected in Zainab's stomach.

OneBlood, which said the ideal number of donors is between seven and 10, is offering to coordinate testing for anyone who believes they fit the criteria. She was then diagnosed with cancer.

Neuroblastoma most often occurs in infants and young children, and accounts for about 6 percent of all cancers in children.

The two-year-old from South Florida, Zainab suffers from Neuroblastoma, a cancer that grows from immature nerve cells surrounding the adrenal glands that affects children of five years of age or under.

'We were all crying, ' said Zainab's father Raheel Mughal in an interview with OneBlood. None of Zainab's family have turned out to be matches, Mughal said. So far, more than 1,000 local donations, as well as donations from other parts of the country have been tested and no additional matches have been identified.

"This is all hands on deck", Bright said in the video.

"What you're doing to save a human life, my daughter's life, is fantastic", shared Mughal.
