India nabs 4 after deadly violence over cow slaughter rumors

Bulandshahr Violence CM Yogi Meets Slain Inspector Subodh Singh's Family at His Residence

A senior police officer and another man were killed on Monday in violent protests over reports of a slaughtered cow, an animal sacred in Hindu culture, in India's Uttar Pradesh state. "A local resident was also killed in firing, it is not clear this was firing from the crowds or the police", district official Anuj Kumar Jha said by phone. Adityanath also held a meeting in Lucknow with the chief secretary, DGP, principal secretary (home) and additional director general of police (intelligence). "But the sons are studying and we have left it to their discretion as they may like to continue with their education", he said.

It said: "Unhone (CM) nirdesh diye hain...abhiyan chala kar mahaul kharab karne wale tatvon ko benakab kar is prakar sajis rachne walon ke virudh prabhavi karyawahi ki jaye (The CM has instructed for drives to be conducted to identify those who are spoiling the environment and investigate those who hatching conspiracies)". "The chief minister only keeps saying "cow, cow, cow". The opposition has said that such incidents are a part of attempts to incite communal unrest ahead of the polls. According to The Wire, the incident took place at the time when lakhs of Muslim were travelling to Bulandshahr since December 1, for a Tablighi Jamaat's ijtema (A religious occasion for the Muslims).

Last year, a Reuters investigation showed that cow vigilantism flourished during the first three years of the term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, run by his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

India's Hindu majority regards the cow as holy and its slaughter is banned in several Indian states. They were demanding the police take immediate action to find out who was responsible for the alleged slaughter of cows. They took the carcasses in tractors to reach the police station located in Chingravathi of Syana. One the of boy's father told NDTV that the two weren't even in the area the day the carcasses were found.

Rashmi said her husband used to ask her to meet him in the police station as he missed her and their two children.
