CFO of China tech giant Huawei Technologies arrested in Vancouver

Canada arrests Huawei global CFO in Vancouver

Wanzhou Meng, who also goes by Sabrina Meng, was arrested in Vancouver on Saturday, Dec. 1, Department of Justice Canada spokesperson Ian McLeod told Global News.

"She is sought for extradition by the United States", he explained.

"As there is a publication ban in effect, we can not provide any further detail at this time", McLeod said.

The Wall Street Journal reported back in April, that the USA authorities have been probing the Chinese telecommunication giant at least since 2016 for allegedly circumventing the Iranian sanctions and supplying US-origin products to the Islamic Republic.

Meng, daughter of the founder of the massive company, is being held under a provisional arrest warrant issued under the Extradition Act.

"The Chinese side has lodged stern representations with the U.S. and Canadian side, and urged them to immediately correct the wrongdoing and restore the personal freedom of Ms Meng Wanzhou".

He declined to say more about the case, citing a publication ban requested by Ms Meng and ordered by the courts.

She is reportedly sought by the U.S. for breaking trade embargo with Iran. Meng adopted her mother's surname.

Huawei CFO arrested in Canada for reportedly violating US sanctions against Iran

In a statement, Huawei said it complied with "all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US and EU".

Huawei is one of the world's leading makers of telecommunications network equipment.

"The company believes the Canadian and US legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion".

The statement, which said it was to be attributed to Huawei headquarters, added that Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export and sanction laws and regulations of the United Nations, USA and European Union.

The US later replaced the ban with a fine and governance changes.

For the same reason, Australia's government blocked China's telecom giant Huawei from its 5G mobile network last summer.

The decision was because of the technology, not because it was a Chinese company, said Andrew Little, Minister Responsible for the GCSB. BT still planned to use Huawei phone mast antennas and some other products.
