Avoid all romaine lettuce, CDC warns amid E. coli outbreak

Just in time for Thanksgiving, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention today (Tuesday) issued a nationwide advisory warning against consumption of any type of romaine lettuce.

Health officials in the USA and Canada on Tuesday told people to avoid eating romaine lettuce because of a new E. coli outbreak.

The CDC says the current outbreak is not related to a separate outbreak of E. coli linked to romaine lettuce earlier this year, which resulted in similar warnings to avoid romaine lettuce in April and May.

No deaths have so far been reported. "Whether you've already bought it, even if you've already eaten some and you haven't noticed symptoms already".

Illnesses started on dates ranging from 8 October to 31 October.

"Most of the individuals who became sick in Ontario and Quebec reported eating romaine lettuce before their illnesses occurred", the release read.

If you don't know whether the lettuce is romaine or whether a salad mix contains romaine lettuce, the CDC advises discarding it. Drawers and shelves where romaine lettuce was stored should be washed and sanitized.

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb says the agency didn't have enough information to request suppliers issue a recall, but he said supermarkets and restaurants should withdraw romaine products until the contamination can be identified.

Lowrie says consumers may return romaine lettuce or items that contain it for a full refund.

When can we add romaine back to our salads?

This spring, more than 210 people were sickened and five died in the largest E. coli outbreak in more than a decade.

Officials were uncertain of the source of the tainted lettuce.

The illness can cause diarrhoea, vomiting and even kidney failure in severe cases.

This investigation is ongoing and CDC will provide more information as it becomes available.
