Police had wanted Rogers in relation to an incident at a cafe the day before the Bourke Street attack, where he and an accomplice allegedly broke into a cafe and took $500 from the till and a basket, the court heard.

Rogers gained instant fame when video posted on social media showed him using a metal shopping cart to try and stop a stabbing rampage in central Melbourne by Hassan Khalif Shire Ali, who killed one man and wounded two others before being fatally shot by police.

But he has been barred from entering Melbourne's city centre under the conditions of his bail.

A Victoria Police spokesperson told 9News Rogers had presented himself to police at around 10pm on Friday after authorities announced he was wanted in connection to a string of alleged burglaries in Melbourne's CBD and St Kilda areas.

He is also accused of attempting to steal a bicycle from an East Brunswick address a few days later.

Police prosecutor Paul Bush opposed bail saying Rogers posed an unacceptable risk of reoffending and that his criminal "priors" spoke for themselves.

"I have known this man for 20 years".

Magistrate Bob Kumar gave Rogers bail on strict conditions that he stay away from the CBD and reside with relatives in an outer suburb, observe a 9pm to 6am curfew, participate in drug and counselling programs and report daily to police.

Yesterday, Donna Stolzenberg, who set up the fundraiser for Mr Rogers, said she was with him on Thursday after he learnt through the media that police were keen to speak with him.
