British PM heading for Brussels for talks on future ties

British Prime Minister Theresa May won support for her beleaguered Brexit deal Friday from key politicians and business groups, but she remained besieged by internal party opponents determined to oust her.

The first question she faced on a LBC radio phone-in show to defend her deal was from a caller who asked her to "respectfully stand down".

More than 20 Conservative lawmakers have written to call for May to go, and a total 48 requests are needed to trigger a leadership contest. The risk of no deal is already causing economic harm as companies of all sizes stockpile goods and components and move jobs and investment out of Britain, it said.

However, no announcement came officially from the 1922 Committee, and May loyalists have said that she would fight any efforts to unseat her, with others saying that a majority of Conservative MPs would ultimately vote to keep her as party leader.

The displeasure of the Minister, refers mainly to the so-called Backstop, as the all those precautions in the exit agreement are referred to, which will prevent any border checks between the UK, Northern Ireland and become member of the EU Ireland is necessary.

Former Brexit minister Dominic Raab, who resigned on Thursday, said on Sunday Mrs May had been "bullied" by Brussels into signing up to the measure.

"The withdrawal agreement we have been presented with is unacceptable to leave and remain voters alike".

Responding to Mrs May's interview, a source in the ERG said: "We have negotiated in good faith with the iceberg and can not break our commitments to it".

When asked about the abuses hurled at her, May said: "It doesn't distract me".

Hardline Brexiteers within her own Conservative Party, meanwhile, are also unimpressed and have suggested the proposed deal could trap the United Kingdom into the customs union forever, effectively forcing it to indefinitely accept EU regulations moving forward.

Speaking to The News, MEP and former UKIP leader Nigel Farage said: 'This deal is the worst in history and is a trap to keep us stuck inside European Union rules.

They specifically want to change the part regarding the arrangements for the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland which has been one of the main sticking points in talks with Brussels.

Raab said that while the agreement was "fatally flawed", it's not too late to change that.

International Trade Secretary Liam Fox, a prominent pro-Brexit voice in Cabinet, threw May a lifeline by urging rebels to "take a rational and reasonable view of this".

Several members of May's Cabinet have resigned over the disagreement with the deal.

But convening a European Council without a British Prime Minister would send the message that Brexit and the Article 50 does not stop.

"Under the plan- a 'backstop" to protect the peace process in Northern Ireland and ensure the border remains open with Ireland-Britain would have to heed European Union competition and state aid rules, without any say over how they are set. "Their deal risks leaving the country in an indefinite half-way house without a real say".
