Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Costs Canada Over $1 Billion A Year

Medical doctor Yolanda Robles, president of the Philippine Pharmacists Association, said selling antibiotics in drugstores have become more stringent in recent years from health threats posed by AMR.

Antimicrobial resistance is a natural phenomenon, and the process has been occurring for millennia, according to Gerry Wright, director of the Institute for Infectious Disease Research at McMaster University.

A two-year study sponsored by the United Kingdom government and the Wellcome Trust, Review on Antimicrobial Resistance, which was published in 2016, estimated that at least 700 000 deaths annually are attributable to drug resistant microorganisms.

Antibiotics may also harm the microbiome by removing the trillions of good bacteria that colonize our bodies and keep us healthy. On top of raising awareness and improving knowledge, we must join forces and tackle antimicrobial resistance from the animal health and environmental perspectives, as well as the human health angle.

The team noted that in busier practices - where there was a higher workload, fewer Global Positioning System per thousand consultations, or where the length of the consultation was shorter - antibiotic prescribing was higher.

Part of the issue, according to IPAC, is that antibiotics are overprescribed by as much as 50 per cent in Canada - and more than 90 per cent of thosedrugs are prescribed outside ofhospitals, making it much more hard to track the extent of antibiotic resistance in the country.

Over the last 15 years, the EUhas stood at the forefront of addressing antimicrobial resistance.

"The data that we have on the scope and breadth of the antibiotic resistance in Canada is not as comprehensive as it should be", Kim said. The same medicines can be used to treat livestock as humans, and resistance can be passed on.

Yemen: UK drafts United Nations resolution condemning Houthi ballistic missiles
A report by Reuters news agency said, "the coalition has instructed forces on the ground to halt fighting inside Hodeidah". However, the Yemeni president was later forced to flee the country to Saudi Arabia when the rebels were approaching Aden.

In many places, the press release stated, antimicrobials are often given without professional oversight and fed to animals as growth promoters.

He also said that health officials are planning to develop a policy to hinder the use of reserved antibiotics.

Experts believe this is just the tip of the iceberg, and that farms are becoming a greater reservoir for antibiotic resistant bacteria, with little oversight and monitoring.

Given that antimicrobial resistance is a serious challenge on both the European Union and global level, worldwide collaboration is of utmost importance.

According to the World Health Organization, coordinated action is required to minimize the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is the resistance of a microorganism to an antimicrobial medicine to which it was originally sensitive. "It's actually increasing", said Dr. Joseph Kim, IPAC's physician director, for CTV News.

AMR now accounts for 700,000 fatalities per year globally.

"And that's the issue that we're finding right now, that there are increasingly bacteria in the clinic where we use lots of antibiotics that are unresponsive to all the drugs that we have available to us".
