Actress Rebel Wilson loses bid to keep most of her defamation payout

Rebel Wilson leaving at the High Court of Australia in Canberra

The actor speaks to the media in Canberra after the high court refused special leave for her to appeal against the withdrawal of nearly 90% of her record $4.7m defamation payout against Bauer Media.

The High Court today knocked back special leave for Wilson to fight her defamation case against Bauer Media.

The actress had sued Woman's Day magazine a year ago over a series of articles in 2015 that she said had painted her as someone who'd lied about her real name, age and childhood in order to make it in Hollywood.

"To win such a huge case and recieve $600,000 in damages from Bauer Media is extremely significant and close to an Australian record".

Hollywood actor Rebel Wilson has lost her appeal to keep most of her record $4.7million payout in defamation against Bauer Media.

If Wilson is successful in her bid for leave to appeal, her case will be heard by the full bench of the High Court.

Hollywood actress Rebel Wilson on Friday said she was proud to "stand up to a bully" despite losing a bid to reinstate a multi-million-dollar defamation payout from an Australian publisher.

A court awarded her a A$4.7m (£2.6m; $3.5m) payout previous year, but that sum was reduced to A$600,000 on appeal.

She said she had "done that successfully", adding: "At the end of the day that is what matters".

Speaking outside the court, Wilson said that her attempt at appealing wasn't motivated by money, but was about "standing up to a bully".

"I've moved on personally and professionally, and it's great now that it's all at a definite end", she said outside court.

But lawyer for Bauer Media David Jackson QC said that point was based on a "misconception of the appropriate tests". An Australian jury sided with her and ordered Bauer Media to pay her A$4.5 million as compensation. I never thought I would be here and it's such an incredible experience to go through, and incredible that I won the case.
