World Health Organization report cautions against antibiotics overuse worldwide
According to Suzanne Hill, director of the Department of Essential Medicines and Health Products at WHO, overuse and misuse of antibiotics are the leading causes of antimicrobial resistance. "But antibiotic overuse can cause bacterial resistance", it said in a statement, urging the prescribed use of antibiotics.
"These differences indicate that some countries probably consume too many antibiotics while others may have not enough access to these drugs", warned the World Health Organization in a press release.
In recognition of the 2018 US Antibiotic Awareness Week and World Antibiotic Awareness Week, 12-18 November, America's pig farmers want consumers to realise the continuous improvement and antibiotic stewardship efforts underway. They would also use the occasion to educate the public on the prevention of the emergence of antibiotic resistance.
The resistant bacteria which infect humans and animals become more hard to treat than the non-resistant ones. "Despite a large majority indicating that health care providers should only prescribe antibiotics when necessary, we know high levels of inappropriate antibiotic use continue to occur, underscoring the need for the federal government to take more action to drive the implementation of educational and antibiotic stewardship programs". The WHO says this could indicate that these countries lack access to these medications."It is important to note that national consumption estimates can mask considerable inequalities in access to and consumption of antibiotics within a country", the report states.Data will guide stewardship effortsThe WHO initiated its global program on surveillance of antimicrobial consumption in 2015, in response to the lack of quality consumption data and a standardized methodology for data collection.
Japan's overall consumption of antibiotics, at 14.19 DDD per 1,000 inhabitants, was about half that of South Korea, but 1.1 percent of Japanese consumption was in the "reserve" category, far more than 0.2 percent in South Korea, the report showed.

"Without effective antibiotics and other antimicrobials, we will lose our ability to treat infections widely used as pneumonia", she warned.
In surgeries including Caesarian section, Knee replacements or hip surgeries, antibiotics play a vital role in healing the wounds but on contrary to this, imagine what happens if the antibiotics never work on surgical incision (a condition when healing becomes hard ) and the wounds becoming the breeding ground for bacteria with pus. The WHO collated data on antibiotic consumption for human health care from 65 countries and areas for the first time. If you are prescribed an antibiotic, make sure to take it exactly as instructed by your doctor. "Misuse of antibiotics puts us all risk", aims at encouraging best practices with the use of antibiotics to reduce resistance.
