The 15-month-old girls, Nima and Dawa, are joined at the torso and share a liver and possibly a bowel.

Scans are inconclusive. The bowel could be shared, or could be mixed up.

'It will be really interesting to see what will happen once the girls are separated'. They were joined at the torso and their livers were joined.

He had previously said that the medical team were prepared for the surgery to take days, but that he realistically envisioned it would take around 6-8 hours.

Nima and Dawa face each other, and can not sit down together.

Once the girls' internal organs were separated, the incisions will be closed over using skin, muscle and fat.

He said: "There will be challenges over the next 24 to 48 hours as with any surgery".

Get well soon Nima and Dawa!

All the doctors, nurses and surgical equipment assigned to each girl were also colour-coded.

Ross Fisher came close to the round of the day when he made the turn in 31 after three birdies and an eagle in his first nine. Tournament favourite Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland is one-under‚ eight shots off the lead.

The girls and their mother, Bhumchu Zangmo, 38, were brought to Australia October from Bhutan by Children First Foundation, an Australian-based charity.

Zangmo would spend the day praying and meditating, she added. "This morning she used the word happy, yesterday she said she was a little bit scared and just pleased that today is finally here", Lodge told Melbourne radio station 3AW.

"She still has this extraordinary calmness about her, which is just awesome".

"There is nothing better in any operation than to be able to go to the parents and say 'we've been able to look after your child, '" he said.

They were separated after a marathon 27-hour surgery, despite doctors initially giving them only a 25% chance of making it. Moving the twins to separate theatres after the split was considered, but ruled out as being too hard.

About 18 people were in the operating theatre - including Bhutanase paediatric surgeon Karma Sherub, who flew into Melbourne this week.

Dr Sherub first met the girls when they were only a day old and played a major role in getting the twins to Australia, having already spent time in the country as the victor of a medical scholarship.

Conjoined twins from Bhutan were separated at an Australian hospital Friday in a delicate, complex operation that divided their shared liver and reconstructed their abdomens.
