New Vegas' Developer Obsidian Entertainment — Microsoft Acquires 'Fallout

Back in October, there were reports that Microsoft was close to acquiring acclaimed RPG developer Obsidian Entertainment.

Obsidian Entertainment is best known as the developer of role-playing games like Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth, the Pillars of Eternity series, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2. The team over at inXile Entertainment has been creating vast worlds for players to explore has a team of highly trained vets that have worked on games such as Wasteland 2, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Bard's Tale IV and the upcoming Wasteland 3.

"It was important for us to find studio partners who have strong creative visions, a mastery of their medium and are expert world-builders", said Microsoft Studios Corporate VP Matt Botty. Well, they're part of the Microsoft family today, as announced during the X018 stream.

The Montreal-based company said Thursday morning the measures will result in $250 million in annual savings. Analysts, on average, expected $3.87 billion revenue and a profit of two cents per share.

Microsoft says that there are now "13 distinct and diverse game development teams" at the company. The same holds true for Obsidian Entertainment, and despite the common heritage both studios share, they will remain free to choose their own creative destiny. It specializes in role-playing games and is now working on a third entry in the post-apocalyptic "Wasteland" series. Fear not, Microsoft assures, "They will continue to operate autonomously with their unique talents, IP and expertise". Obsidian most famously developed Fallout: New Vegas.

InXile head Brian Fargo has enjoyed an illustrious career producing quality RPGs that put choice and outcome at the forefront.
