Trump promises peace, but turmoil over Russian Federation probe and media intensifies

Chris Christie

The Mueller investigation is looking into alleged foreign government efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election and includes possible links between Trump's campaign and the Russian government. The almost year and a half long investigation by the special counsel stems from allegations of Russian Federation coordinating with members of the Trump presidential campaign.

"There's a disrespect for norms, a disrespect for the rule of law, and a disrespect for the conventions of society and politics", he said, adding that politicians needed to "rise above party" to confront Trump.

Sessions, a 71-year-old former Republican senator from Alabama, was the first senator to endorse Trump's insurgent presidential campaign. Conway says that Rosenstein was at the White House Thursday and Friday.

Democrats also raised concerns about the appointment of Whitaker, 49, who will now oversee Mueller's probe.

The next month, Whitaker wrote an op-ed posted on CNN's website in which he argued that Mueller's investigation appeared to be going too far and may constitute a "witch hunt", echoing one of Trump's favorite descriptions to criticize and discredit the probe.

Under the supervision of the Department of Justice, special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation and whether Trump unlawfully tried to obstruct the probe, along with possible financial misconduct by the president's family and associates.

Congressional Democrats are calling on Whitaker to recuse himself because of comments he made before joining the Justice Department that were critical and skeptical of the probe.

On Wednesday, Goodlatte issued a statement praising Sessions' service as attorney general and wishing Whitaker well in his new role.

King, who sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee, pointed to the passage of a bill supporting Mueller's investigation as the most important action in the wake of the Sessions dismissal, but didn't offer any more specifics about what should be done. One of those offices, in NY, is leading an investigation involving the president's former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, and hush money payments Cohen says he made to two women who say they had sex with Trump.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump's legal team has begun working with the president to craft responses to questions from Mueller's team as part of their investigation, sources close to Trump told ABC.

Sessions, who likely suspected his ouster was imminent, was spotted by reporters giving some of his grandchildren a tour of the White House over the weekend.

Andy McCarthy of National Review also has high regard for Matt Whitaker, describing him as "well credentialed and an excellent choice to assume the duties of attorney general". Christie visited the White House Thursday and met with Mr. Trump's son-in-law and top aide Jared Kushner, whose father he sent to prison while Christie was a USA attorney.

Under the special counsel regulation, Whitaker has the power to block any "investigative or procedural step" Mueller recommends, such as bringing an indictment or subpoena, if he determines it to be "inappropriate or unwarranted under established Departmental practices".
