One dead after three stabbed in Bourke Street attack

One person has been killed on a central Melbourne street where a knife wielding man was left in a critical condition after being shot by police.

The auto burst into flames near the corner of Swanston and Bourke streets about 4.20pm on Friday and while the vehicle was quickly extinguished, reports soon followed of a knife attack.

The police there issue a statement saying that a vehicle had burst into flames and that a small number of people were being treated for stab wounds. A man was arrested at the scene and has been taken to hospital under police guard in a critical condition.

Police are not looking for anyone further at this early stage.

One person was believed to be in a critical condition in hospital suffering a neck injury, a statement from Ambulance Victoria said.

Chilling footage uploaded to social media shows the suspect repeatedly swinging the weapon at two officers before one of them draws their firearm and opens fire.

More than 100 police have swarmed on the area. Their condition is not yet know.

"There was a massive flame and bang, just smoke and lots of people", witness Shelley Reid told Nine News.

It comes as a trial continues into the horrifying rampage in Bourke St in January a year ago.
