Republicans retain control of US Senate

A voter casts his ballot in the midterm election at the East Midwood Jewish Center polling station in the Brooklyn borough of New York City

Despite a seemingly energized grassroots electorate, the Democratic Party has been viewed as a long shot to take back control of the Senate where Republicans now hold a narrow majority of 51 seats to 49 seats for Democrats. His take-no-prisoners approach troubled many Republicans seeking to appeal to moderate voters in suburban House districts, but Trump prioritized base voters in the deep-red states that could determine the fate of the Senate.

The results were hailed as a turning point by Democrats in elections billed as a verdict on the first two years of Mr Trump's divisive presidency but fell short of a "blue wave" of sweeping victories.

Democrats picked off two Republican House seats in Florida, including one held by Representative Carlos Curbelo.

Maintaining control of the Senate paves the way for Republicans to continue advancing the President's agenda in the upper chamber. Joe Donnelly in IN and Republican Marsha Blackburn's win in Tennessee made it much more hard for Democrats to make inroads.

Nevada Sen. Dean Heller, the only GOP incumbent seeking re-election in a state Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton won in 2016, became the only Republican senator to lose.

You're still up either because Senate returns are really slow, or you are obsessing over Alaska's toss-up gubernatorial race.

In one example, voter turnout in a critical swing district in Florida was 87% of what it was in 2016, when Trump won the presidency. Four years later, Brat could find himself on the losing end of another upset, facing a strong challenge from Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency operations officer. Trump had been tweeting support for specific GOP candidates, even as he acknowledged potential losses by emphasizing that his focus was on the Senate.

American voters poured out across their bitterly divided country on Tuesday to deliver judgment on Donald Trump in midterm polls where opposition Democrats seized partial control of Congress. As that number indicates, voter enthusiasm is high. Nelson, 76, faced outgoing Republicans Gov. Rick Scott, who poured over $50 million of his own fortune into his campaign, the most in the U.S. One quarter of those casting a House ballot said they did so in part to support him.

Almost 40 percent of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to AP VoteCast, a national survey of the electorate, while one-in-four said they voted to express support for Trump.

Sanders says the president and first lady Melania Trump are looking forward to watching election results Tuesday night with friends and family in the White House residence.

Americans are turning out in record numbers to have their say on President Trump.

Preliminary exit poll results reported by ABC News showed that 18- to 29-year-olds accounted for 13 percent of voters nationally, up from 11 percent in 2014. Still, Republican voters tended to be overwhelmingly supportive of the president.

Two other sources close to the White House said that Trump is already blaming retiring House Speaker Paul Ryan for what the President's team is billing as a bad night. He was active on Twitter throughout much of the day, blasting out endorsements for Republican candidates and weighing in on the balloting.

Democrats need 23 votes to flip the House and two votes to take control of the Senate.

However, the Democrats will now head House committees that can investigate the president's tax returns, possible business conflicts of interest and possible links between his 2016 election campaign and Russian Federation.

Polls are also closed in parts of in, where Democrat Joe Donnelly, a top target of the President's frenetic final midterm election campaign swing, is fighting an uphill battle for re-election against Republican Mike Braun.

They paved their path to victory by defeating Democrats Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Missouri's Claire McCaskill.

No US president has ever been removed from office. "Do not let their scare tactics frighten you away from the polls".

Heading into Election Day, Republicans had said their best-case scenario after Tuesday's voting was a narrower House GOP majority than the 45-seat margin they now command.

But the Democratic momentum was not strong enough to carry some prized House recruits over the finish line. About three-quarters of the registered voters named health care as in important issue to their vote, according to recent Pew research.

"Democrats are inviting caravan after caravan, illegal immigrants to flood into our country", he said at a rally on the election's eve Monday.

In Texas, Sen Ted Cruz staved off a far tougher than expected challenge from Democratic candidate Beto O'Rourke, whose record-smashing fundraising and celebrity have set off buzz he could be a credible 2020 White House contender.
