Networks declare Democrats will capture the House of Representatives

Nancy Pelosi and Paul Ryan

Voters will elect Representativse for two-year terms and Senators for six-year terms.

In the one of the most eagerly-anticipated United States midterm elections in recent memory, the Democrats were on course to gain the 23 seats they needed to capture the Republican-held House.

That was enough to give pundits confidence in calling the overall race for a majority in the House.

Just a day before the midterm elections, President Trump said he didn't think they'd be a referendum on his first two years on office.

"Lavrov also reiterated Moscow's position that it is not meddling in USA elections".

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who may be selected to once again become Speaker of the House, has downplayed talk of impeaching either man, but conservatives have argued those assurances were merely meant to hide Democrats' true intentions so as not to provoke more Republican voter turnout.

"We will have a responsibility to find our common ground where we can, stand our ground where we can't", Pelosi said.

Despite Democrats hailing an end to one-party dominance at the top of USA politics, Trump spoke of a "tremendous success".

Trump tweeted late Tuesday, seemingly choosing to focus on the Senate results.

Historically, the party in power loses several seats during the first midterm election of a new president, particularly if his national job approval ratings are low.

The House of Representatives has flipped from Republican control into the hands of the Democrats, US networks projected.

All 435 seats in the House, 35 seats in the 100-member Senate and 36 of the 50 state governorships were up for grabs. Democrats won seats stretching from suburban Washington, New York and Philadelphia to outside Miami, Chicago and Denver.

Democrats could derail Trump's legislative agenda for the next two years should they win control of the House or the Senate.

The Democratic gains could have big effects, soon and longer term.

TENNESSEE: GOP Marsha Blackburn Wins Senate Seat
Pop superstar Taylor Swift's endorsement of a Democratic Senate candidate in Tennessee didn't amount to much. Bob Corker, were always uneasy with Blackburn's conservative firebrand of politics.

Former president Barack Obama and other prominent Democrats joined candidates on the campaign trail.

Political observers had a close eye on Georgia, where Democratic nominee Stacey Abrams was running to become the country's first black female governor, and Republican Karen Handel's race was expected to serve as a bellwether for the direction of the House.

The Democrats' successful takeover of the House was fueled by flipping seats nationwide, including in Virginia and Texas.

Trump packed his closing argument with hardline immigration rhetoric and harsh attacks on Democrats as he stared down the prospect of Republican losses that could shadow his presidency.

The governor focused much of his campaign on his opposition to President Donald Trump and Trump's policies, and he continued that in his victory speech, at times addressing the president directly, saying NY is not "buying" what Trump is selling.

The loss of power will test Trump's political hold on House Republicans, most of whom had pledged their support for him lest they face the wrath of the party's core supporters, who remain in his corner. "All the GOP has is the other half of Congress, the Supreme Court, and a president who does whatever he wants".

Republicans entered the night commanding the Senate only narrowly, 51-49.

Six of the seven Democratic state senators unseated in the primaries were members of the now-defunct Independent Democratic Conference, a coalition of wealthy Senate Democrats.

Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler, who is slated to steer the House Judiciary Committee warned that the election was about accountability for Trump.

"We need to keep the Senate Republican to support the agenda of Donald Trump", he said.

But a US Department of Homeland Security official said the reports of voting technology failures appeared so far to have had no significant impact in preventing people from voting.

Trump inserted himself into the midterm elections like few presidents before him, wading into Republican primaries, hosting near constant rallies around the country and basing his message on fear rather than a record of accomplishment.

Still, about one-third of voters said Trump was not a factor in their votes. In the last such congressional elections in 2014, there were 27.5 million early votes.
