Wet and mild: Warm winter predicted for much of the US

"From about, maybe NY and northward, that's all above a 40 percent confidence, so that's between a 40 and 50 percent chance that temperatures will be above average", says Mike Halpert, deputy director of the Climate Prediction Center at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Maryland.

An overall mild winter is expected when it comes to temperatures, with most of the US expected to see warmer than normal temperatures, some much warmer than normal, according to the NOAA outlook from its Climate Prediction Center.

The Climate Prediction Center (a division of NOAA) has released their early outlook for the winter 2018-2019 season.

Because of a likely El Nino, which is the episodic warming of the eastern and central tropical Pacific Ocean, NOAA favors above average amounts of precipitation along the southern tier of the United States, creeping up the East Coast through the Mid-Atlantic.

Northern Florida and southern Georgia could see the wettest conditions this winter, according to NOAA, followed by central and Eastern North Carolina, much of South Carolina, Texas and New Mexico, northern Georgia and far southern parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.

Warmer-than-normal conditions are anticipated across much of the northern and western US, with the greatest likelihood in Alaska and from the Pacific Northwest to the Northern Plains. On Thursday, NOAA released their annual 2018-19 Winter Outlook. They also said the El Nino will have a 70 percent to 75 percent chance of happening.

-The Southeast, Tennessee Valley, Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic all have equal chances for below-, near- or above-average temperatures.

Wetter-than-average conditions are favored across the southern tier of the US, and up into the Mid-Atlantic.

Precipitation is expected to be above normal across the southern tier of the United States, extending up into the Mid-Atlantic. "Even during a warmer-than-average winter, periods of cold temperatures and snowfall are still likely to occur", NOAA said. Since the Southeast is the only region not projected to have above-normal temperatures, a few winter storms could bring snow to the Deep South this season.

"Snow forecasts are generally not predictable more than a week in advance", the agency said.

Meantime, drier-than-average conditions are expected for the Great Lakes and portions of the Northern Rockies and the Northern Plains. NOAA'S next update will be available on November 15th.
