Saudi vows to 'hit back' at sanctions over Khashoggi

Jim Ross

Trump said that he had invited Khashoggi's fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, to visit him at the White House and that his staff was working out arrangements with her. It comes as one of the first signs of the economic pain that Riyadh could suffer over the suspected murder. The market clawed back some of the losses, trading down over 4 percent later on.

Asked whether bin Salman gave an order to kill Khashoggi, Trump said: "Well, nobody knows yet, but we'll probably be able to find out".

Otherwise, the USA risks losing credibility when it comes to human rights, he told CBS' Face the Nation on Sunday.

U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to get to the bottom of what happened in a separate CBS interview, due to be aired Sunday, and said there would be "severe punishment" if it were found Khashoggi was killed by the Saudi government. The lawmakers' letter was a preliminary step under the Global Magnitsky Act toward taking punitive action.

Twenty-two USA senators last Wednesday forced a US investigation of whether human rights sanctions should be imposed over the disappearance of Khashoggi.

Turkish authorities say a team of Saudis killed Khashoggi, and USA intelligence intercepts show Saudi officials discussing an operation to lure Khashoggi - a Saudi citizen who had been living in the United States - back to Saudi Arabia from his home in Virginia and detain him.

Cengiz, who spent hours waiting for Khashoggi outside while holding his mobile phones, says her fiancée never walked out of the consulate to meet her. Surveillance footage shows her pacing around outside at 5:33 p.m., speaking on her mobile phone.

The UAE, Oman, Jordan, Palestine and Yemen also expressed their full solidarity with Saudi Arabia. Add Trump Administration as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Trump Administration news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

It's unclear, however, whether Saudi Arabia would be willing to unilaterally cut production.

Mr Trump said: "There's a lot at stake".

However, Trump said he did not want to block military sales to Saudi Arabia, one option that has rattled U.S. defence contractors, saying "there are other ways of punishing". But he added, "There are other ways of punishing, to use a word that's a pretty harsh word, but it's true".

Saudi Arabia came under increasing pressure on Sunday over the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi as the foreign ministers of the UK, France and Germany took the unusual step of issuing a statement calling for an investigation.

Khashoggi was last seen walking into the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

"He said, 'See you later my darling, ' and went in", she told the AP. I'm sorry, that is not American foreign policy.

"How can we criticize (Russian President) Putin for killing journalists if we allow an ally to do the same?" he continued.

The Trump administration plans to reimpose sanctions on oil exports from Iran on November 5 and Trump has urged Saudi Arabia to boost oil output to help make up for the loss.

They present catastrophic scenarios that would hit the United States economy much harder than Saudi Arabia's economic climate.

"His voice and his ideas will reverberate, from Turkey to Saudi Arabia, and across the world". Kushner and the crown prince dined at the White House in March 2017, and they met again in Riyadh in October 2017. However, he also has said he wants to maintain the arms deals he struck with the kingdom on a trip to Riyadh, his first overseas as president.

The president's own businesses have also benefited from transactions with the Saudis.

The Saudi dissent vanished after entering the Gulf kingdom's consulate in Istanbul, Turkey 12 days ago. "He (Trump) will take action". According to Trump's own words, the Saudis have always been heavily invested in Trump's businesses.

Later Mr Hunt said that whatever happened now was "absolutely up to Saudi Arabia". They spend $40 million, $50 million.

"It is being left here all alone, without them, that is most painful".
