Saudi Arabia to let Turkey search its Istanbul consulate

"It is not possible for us to remain silent on this because this is not an ordinary incident", Erdoğan told members of the Turkish press accompanying him during his two-day visit to Hungary.

Jamal Khashoggi has been missing since visiting the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul Oct. 2.

"Riyadh is our only rational (Arab) partner because they agree with most of our long-term goals", said Hussein Ibish, with the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington.

But Turkish officials declined to go on record as Turkey tries to manage its hard relationship with regional powerhouse Saudi Arabia.

Media captionCCTV footage shows missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Khashoggi, 59, who was once close to the Saudi royal family and has served as an adviser for senior Saudi officials, left the country previous year to live in the USA in self-imposed exile, saying he feared retribution for his criticism of Saudi policy in the Yemen war and its crackdown on dissent. "All the related developments, ins and outs from Turkey, have been put under the spotlight", Erdoğan added.

Responding to Saudi claims that the cameras were not functioning on October 2, Erdoğan said this was not a logical explanation.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of SC has warned that if there was any truth to the allegations of wrongdoing by the Saudi government, it would be "devastating" to the U.S. -Saudi relationship.

Turkish spokesman Hami Aksoy said authorities are "open to cooperation" and willing to examine the consulate grounds, though it was not clear when a search would take place.

Britain's foreign minister called for urgent answers and the chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Bob Corker, who has seen classified intelligence on the case, said information pointed to Khashoggi being killed.

The White House also said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and senior officials had spoken with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman on Tuesday and asked for more details about the situation. "I am concerned about it".

"We knew of Jamal's interest in building platforms to promote the discussion of issues that he is passionate about, notably freedom and democracy in the Middle East", he told the Daily Beast. Trump, unsurprisingly, spoke the most, providing gems like "I've never lost an election in my life, okay? We should be extending support from our federal agencies for a real investigation", the senator tweeted.

David Kaye, the United Nations special rapporteur on freedom of expression, said the disappearance of Saudi government critic Jamal Khashoggi "puts basically the Turks in the position of having both to maintain a diplomatic relationship and to deal with a real important, high-profile investigation".
