IL now reports nine cases of a rare polio-like illness that has popped up in several states It's called Acute Flaccid Myelitis.

The rare condition can be caused by a virus, a genetic disorder and environmental toxins.

Doctors call severe cases of AFM a polio-like illness where people will have paralyzed limbs.

AFM typically affects young children and creates polio-like symptoms. Most of the cases nationwide have been in children.

We've been reporting about the polio-like illness affecting two children here in Chicago, nine in northern IL and others across the country, but how concerned should parents be about the spread to their children? And yesterday (Oct. 10), the Illinois Department of Public Health said it had received recent reports of nine children diagnosed with the condition.

"These are all children under five", said Chas DeBolt, a senior epidemiologist for vaccine-preventable disease at the Department of Health.

Outside of IL, there are now a few dozen cases of AFM in the United States.

The department of health says the main symptom to look for is a sudden loss of feeling in arms and legs.

On Monday, news broke that six children in Minnesota have been infected with the rare disease that causes lowered mobility or paralysis in the arms and legs.

In 2017, 33 cases were reported in 16 states.

The condition, acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), was first identified in 2014, when there were 120 cases, NBC News reported. "Do more research. Just don't settle for, 'Oh, I don't know, it might not be a big deal, ' because sometimes it turns into this, and so you really need to push for and be an advocate for your child", said her mother, Katy Payne. Practices such as regular hand-washing are recommended. After the 120 cases in 2014, there were 22 in 2015, 149 in 2016, and 33 past year, according to the agency.
