AP Analysis: Missing writer shows Saudi Arabia's dark side

Jamal Khashoggi during a protest in front of Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul

His Turkish fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, who waited for him outside the consulate, said he never came out of the building.

Turkey can not remain silent over the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, President Tayyip Erdogan was quoted as saying by Hurriyet newspaper on Thursday, adding Turkey is investigating all aspects of the case.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., a longtime critic of the Saudi government, has said he'll try to force a vote in the Senate blocking US arms sales to Saudi Arabia. Sen.

Turkey's state news agency, quoting unnamed sources, said Saudi Arabia's Ambassador to Ankara, Waleed A Elkhereiji, was summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Sunday. Violence against journalists across the globe is a threat to freedom of the press & human rights.

The interview was conducted three days before Khashoggi's disappearance, when he was in London for a conference, the BBC said. The Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations allowed for consulates to be searched by authorities of a host country with consent of the mission chief, he said.

Additional reporting from Newsy affiliate CNN.

Khashoggi hadn't lived in Saudi Arabia since he moved to the United States a year ago. There were no details about when the search would take place.

During a United Nations briefing on Tuesday in Geneva, Shamdasani said that the rights office is urging Turkey and Saudi Arabia to cooperate and conduct an "impartial and independent investigation" into Khashoggi's disappearance in Istanbul, and "to make the findings public".

It was not immediately clear if the Anadolu report referred to one of those aircraft.

Khashoggi, a contributor to the Post who has been critical of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, vanished after an appointment with Saudi officials on Tuesday at the consulate in Istanbul.

It has voiced deep concern at the "apparent enforced disappearance". US President Donald Trump has told reporters he will speak with Saudi officials to discuss the case.

With every day, leaks from the Turkish investigation are drip-fed to the media here - and hope that Jamal Khashoggi might still be alive fades further.

What have the Saudis said?

A friend of Khashoggi's said officials told him to "make your funeral preparations".

Saudi Arabia is a longtime ally of the United States, but on Monday senior US officials expressed alarm over Khashoggi's disappearance.

The ambassador said the Istanbul consulate is fully cooperating with local authorities and that a Saudi team was sent to Istanbul to cooperate with their Turkish counterparts.

The United Nations human rights office voiced deep concern on Tuesday at Khashoggi's disappearance and urged Riyadh and Ankara to investigate.

In addition, Saudi media are claiming that the woman named "Khadijah" is "promoting herself as Jamal's fiancé", but is not known to Jamal's family and she is not his fiancé.

Khashoggi was once a Saudi newspaper editor and is a familiar face on political talk shows on Arab satellite television networks. Rand Paul said he'd try to push through a Senate vote stalling USA arms sales to Saudi Arabia. Fearing for his life, Khashoggi has lived in self-imposed exile in the United States for the previous year.

But other Turkish officials have said they believe that Khashoggi was killed by Saudi agents inside the consulate.

Mr Erdogan was more circumspect, saying on Sunday he remained "positive" and would await the results of an investigation as Turkish authorities continue to look at camera footage and airport arrivals and departures.

Erdogan, who said he's personally following the case, added that Turkey had no documents or evidence regarding the case.
