Where is Jamal Khashoggi? Saudi Arabia denies abduction of missing journalist

A Saudi official looks through the door of the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul during a demonstration for missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi

Turkey's criminal investigation into the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi is focusing on seven suspects who were filmed near the Gulf country's consulate in Istanbul, according to local media reports.

The Washington Post released on Tuesday what appears to be the last-known photograph of Khashoggi, walking into the Saudi consulate from which he apparently never left.

US President Donald Trump has expressed concern about the writer's disappearance.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saudi officials need to prove that Khashoggi left the building after arriving last Tuesday to get a document for his upcoming marriage. But Turkey has formally requested access to search the Saudi Consulate as part of what Turkish officials say is a murder investigation. The ministry did not say when the premises would be searched. He served as an adviser to senior Saudi officials.

Searches of diplomatic buildings are incredibly rare - under global law, the grounds of an embassy or consulate are considered to belong to the country that is represented there, not the host nation.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said this week that the kingdom would allow Turkey to search the consulate for Khashoggi.

A surveillance image has surfaced, showing Khashoggi entering the consulate October 2. The Post said it obtained this image from a "person close to the investigation".

The Sabah newspaper published images of the men apparently taken at passport control. "The consulate officials can not save themselves by simply saying "he has left", Erdogan told a news conference in Budapest, Hungary, where he is on a two-day visit. Security camera footage shows boxes being loaded into the van, which carried diplomatic number plates. However, a number of closed-circuit surveillance cameras surround the area.

Turkish police investigating the case said on Saturday that 15 Saudis, including several officials, arrived in Istanbul on two planes and entered the consulate while Khashoggi was inside.

Turkish officials told Reuters news agency over the weekend that they believed Khashoggi had been killed inside the consulate, allegations Saudi Arabia rejects.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has been included in the list alongside Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero. The award will be given on December 3.

Khashoggi had gone to the consulate in Istanbul for paperwork to marry his Turkish fiancée.

Mr Khashoggi, who was living in self-imposed exile in the U.S. and working for the Washington Post before his disappearance, was a frequent critic of the kingdom's de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, whom he described as a "brash and abrasive young innovator" who was "acting like Putin".

Where is Jamal Khashoggi? Those policies are all seen as initiatives of the crown prince, who has also presided over a roundup of activists and businessmen.

Saudi authorities insist he left the consulate.

The country has demanded Saudi Arabia prove he left, while not providing evidence to support the claim he was killed inside. Why don't you prove it?

The details will add to pressure on the Saudi government to explain who the 15 Saudis were and what they were doing during their brief trip to Istanbul. Though wary of each other, Saudi Arabia and Turkey have traditionally tried to avoid public spats. Relations were already strained after Turkey sent troops to the Gulf state of Qatar past year in a show of support after its Gulf neighbors, including Saudi Arabia, imposed an embargo on Doha.

In March, the State Department approved a $670 million arms sale to Saudi Arabia, part of a promised $110 billion in deals touted by Trump after his first presidential trip to the Saudi capital previous year.

Khashoggi left Saudi Arabia previous year saying he feared retribution for his criticism of Saudi policy over the Yemen war and its crackdown on dissent, and since then wrote columns for the Washington Post newspaper.

Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner maintains close personal ties with the crown prince. I don't like hearing about it.
