Google slow to report bug that imperiled personal data

The Wall Street Journal reported that Google executives opted against notifying users earlier because of concerns it would catch the attention of regulators and draw comparisons to a data privacy scandal at Facebook.

The data involved was limited to optional profile fields, including name, age, gender, occupation and email address, Google said.

Google said: 'We found no evidence that any developer was aware of this bug, or abusing the API, and we found no evidence that any Profile data was misused'.

Google is closing the Google+ social network after an error exposed the private data of hundreds of thousands of users last spring, in an incident which the company never disclosed to those affected.

The company is also stressing its commitment to security - now offering "more fine-grained control" of what account data Google users share with third-party apps.

Now, after several years of speculation that it was going to be shut down, Google is bringing Google+ for consumers to an end.

Court watchers will be looking to see whether the new justice asks questions at arguments and, if so, what he asks. Arguments will resume Wednesday in separate cases, one involving the detention of undocumented immigrants.

For Google, a data privacy reckoning may finally come as a result of a service that it admits nearly no one uses much anymore.

The company said in an official blog post that it had discovered and patched the leak in March and had no evidence that data has been misused or anyone had exploited it. The bug in the API allowed the developers to not just access the private, non-public data of the users who signed up as well as people they are connected to. "FINALLY", tweeted David Byttow, a former Google engineer.

Tyler Moffitt, senior threat research analyst at security firm Webroot, said: "Although it seems that Google has shut down an entire line of business due to this breach, from a GDPR perspective, the company appears to have gotten off lightly".

Google has admitted that adoption of the its social network and subsequent user engagement has been low, with 90% of Google+ user sessions lasting for less than five seconds. The bug has reportedly existed since 2015, and Google does not know if the information has been used.

For Gmail apps requesting permission to user data Google will only grant access to apps which 'directly enhancing email functionality-such as email clients, email backup services and productivity services (e.g., CRM and mail merge services)'.

To save any of the data you shared on your Google+ account, including photos, visit Google Takeout's Download Your Data page, select Google+ (and any other Google products where you'd like an archive of your data).
