Google falls after report it covered up potential security flaw

We do know the affected accounts had their full name, email addresses, birth date, gender, profile photos, places lived, occupation, and relationship status exposed.

So, for example, if you're using your Google account to sing into a new service and it requests access to your Calendar and Drive, you'll be able to grant or deny that permission on a per-service basis.

But in a blog post today, Ben Smith, Google Fellow and Vice President of Engineering, said the bug allowed third-party apps to also gain access to users' data that was marked private, not just the public data the apps would have normally been allowed to see. The undertaking is called Project Strobe, which looks "at the operation of our privacy controls, platforms where users were not engaging with our APIs because of concerns around data privacy, areas where developers may have been granted overly broad access, and other areas in which our policies should be tightened". Google says that there was no evidence that the information was misused, but that a total of 438 apps had access. As part of that, a bug in Google + was found that could have been a potential leak if it wasn't caught in time.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that Google had opted not to disclose the issue with its Application Program Interfaces (API) partly due to fears of regulatory scrutiny, citing unnamed sources and internal documents.

Google is shutting down its Google+ social network after it covered up a gaping security hole that exposed the personal data of half a million internet users. The issue reportedly affected users on the site between 2015 and March 2018. That means we can not confirm which users were impacted by this bug. Y'know...other than users' data, and consumer trust. They'll further limit these permissions by removing contact interaction data for the Android Contacts API. Users (whoever they might be) have had plenty of time to download and migrate their data before the platform's final days arrive in August of next year.

Saudi Arabia denies 'baseless' reports of Turkish ambassador's expulsion
The United States is seeking more information, a State Department official said. "We Saudis deserve better", he said. She and Turkish officials say he never emerged, even though Saudi Arabia insists he left the building.

Such apps include email clients, backup and productivity services, Smith said.

"We have many enterprise customers who are finding great value in using Google+ within their companies", the internet firm said.

Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai was briefed on the plan not to notify users after an internal committee had reached that decision, according to WSJ. That's when Google finally shut the door on the bug. In a blog post by the company highlighting its findings, it's stated that 90 percent of all Google+ visits last fewer than five seconds.

The review did highlight the significant challenges in creating and maintaining a successful Google+ that meets consumers' expectations.
