Confirmed deaths near 2000, still more likely in Indonesia

Indonesia-Sulawesi-Earthquake-Tsunami-Volcano-October 3-2018

Indonesian rescue workers will stop searching for the bodies of victims of an quake and tsunami on the island of Sulawesi on Thursday, the national disaster mitigation agency said on Sunday.

"We just find bodies, every day", says Syafaruddin, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

Relief supplies from Japan, including tents and generators, have arrived at Indonesia's Sulawesi Island, which was devastated by a magnitude-7.5 quake and tsunami on September 28th. Many more remain missing. The team only had a hand drill and stopped digging as night fell.

"They were found in front of my brother's house opposite the mosque", Rahman said.

Indonesia sits along the world's most tectonically active region, and its 260 million people are vulnerable to earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions.

Indonesian national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho says the body of a South Korean missing since last Friday's quake and tsunami in central Sulawesi has been found.

The tens of thousands left homeless by the disaster are scattered across Palu and beyond, many squatting outside their ruined homes or bunkered down in makeshift camps and entirely dependent on handouts to survive.

Nugroho confirmed that rescuers found the body of the South Korean, making him the only foreigner known to have perished in the disaster.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla, visiting the disaster zone, said recovery would be completed in two years, beginning with a two-month emergency response phase when everyone who lost their house would get temporary shelter.

The Aid or access is still an obstacle to reach the stricken communities on Indonesian island of Sulawesi, UN aid agencies said on Friday.

Reports indicate that the country's early detection warning systems were not working before the tsunami hit.

National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said 11 transport aircraft have been pledged, including two each from Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom and Malaysia, and one from India.

Indonesia has often been reluctant to be seen as relying on outside help to cope with disasters.

Plane loads of supplies were landing with increasing frequency in Palu, where daisy chains of troops unloaded supplies directly onto trucks or helicopters.

The aid is part of a $3.6 million relief commitment, including more than 50 medical professionals, that Australia made on Wednesday.

In some areas, rescuers use sniffer dogs to detect victims buried under tons of mud and debris.

The government shunned foreign aid this year when earthquakes struck the island of Lombok but it accepted help from overseas for Sulawesi.

Local television reported the 92 people detained were caught with goods including motor oil, tires, ceramic tiles, and farming equipment.

Outside the church, Malonda said the intensity of the disaster had taken even scientists by surprise and called it the will of God. Traumatised survivors are desperate for any help. He said security will be necessary for economic activity to resume.

The Indonesian authorities and locals at Palu and Balikpapan thanked the NZDF personnel for helping, Natapu said.

"The search for the victim is expected to be completed on Thursday", Sutopo told Xinhua.

Lt. Col. Agus Hariyanto said 100 marines landed Thursday at Palu airport and 200 more were on their way.
