MI man makes shocking discovery about 30-year-old doorstop

The Edmore meteorite found in northeast Montcalm County in the 1930s and made public this year is Michigan's sixth largest weighing in at 22.5 pounds

Geology faculty member Monica Sirbescu shared that an unidentified man from Grand Rapids, Michigan, approached her to check out his 22.5-pound meteorite. "It's the most valuable specimen I have ever held in my life, monetarily and scientifically".

A rock that was used as a doorstop for decades at a farm in Michigan, US has been identified as a meteorite valued about US$100,000 (A$141,000).

After testing, she concluded it was a meteorite, consisted of 11.5% nickel and 88.5% iron.

The man had the meteorite with him since 1988 when he bought a farm in Edmore.

The charred hunk of space debris is the sixth largest meteorite ever found in the state, and it's estimated worth tops $100,000.

After analyzing the rock themselves, the Smithsonian Institution researchers confirmed the Sirbescu's first results. While touring the property, the man spotted the rock propping open a door and asked the farmer what it was. He says the farmer who sold him the property told him it landed in his backyard in the 1930s. In the morning, the farmer and his father found the crater and dug out the still-warm meteorite.

The buyer ended up leaving the property eventually but took the 10-kilogram rock with him.

It's a story that began out of this world almost a hundred years ago when a meteorite crashed down to earth near Edmore, Michigan.

"Just think, what I was holding is a piece of the early solar system that literally fell into our hands", Sirbescu said of the meteorite.

The Smithsonian and a mineral museum in ME are considering buying the meteorite - now called "Edmore" - for display, according to CMU.
