BC adds 33300 jobs in September, unemployment plummets

The Statistics Canada offices at Tunney's Pasture in Ottawa are seen

The province added 33,300 jobs last month, pushing its unemployment rate down 1.1 percentage points to 4.2 per cent, according Statistics Canada data released October 5.

"Canadian employment surged 63K in September according to the Labour Force Survey, above consensus which was looking for a 25K print".

The job gains were also nearly entirely in Ontario and British Columbia, with little change in the other provinces.

The data is likely to cement market expectations that the Bank of Canada raise hike interest rates again on Oct 24, for a fifth time since July 2017 on a strengthening economy.

Statistics Canada on Friday reported a gain of 63,300 jobs in September and said the jobless rate had edged down to 5.9 percent from 6.0 percent in August. It quickly gave up all the gains as USA data showed the unemployment rate fell to near a 49-year low of 3.7 percent.

Numerous jobs were found in construction, up by 28,000 in September, reversing two previous monthly declines. Private sector employment rose massively by 96K while public sector jobs remained essentially unchanged and self-employed dropped by 35K.

Across B.C., the province added 33,300 jobs last month, pushing its unemployment rate down 1.1 percentage points to 4.2 per cent. That's a decrease of 3.9 per cent compared to the second quarter of 2018 as fewer people searched for work, according to the labour force survey.
