"China wants a different American president", Mr Pence said in a speech at the Hudson Institute think tank in Washington, adding the United States will continue to expose Beijing's "malign influence and interference".
In a blatant attempt to invert the script on election "meddling" and interference, Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday accused the Chinese government of seeking to undermine USA democracy and charged, without evidence, that Beijing is acting malevolently because "China wants a different American president".
Citing Trump's move to levy tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese imports and threatening to "levy even more, with the possibility of substantially more than doubling that number", Pence said that "the American people deserve to know that, in response to the strong stand that President Trump has taken, Beijing is pursuing a comprehensive and coordinated campaign to undermine support for the President".
Pence's remarks come a week after President Trump called out China for its interference during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council. It goes beyond the bitter trade war between the world's two biggest economies and includes disputes such as cyber activities, Taiwan and the South China Sea.
"The relevant speech made unwarranted accusations against China's domestic and foreign policies and slandered China by claiming that China meddles in U.S. internal affairs and election", Ms Hua said in a statement.
"China has initiated an unprecedented effort to influence American public opinion, the 2018 elections, and the environment leading into the 2020 presidential elections", Pence said in a speech at the conservative Hudson Institute. As evidence, he pointed to a recent advertisement that a Chinese state media outlet placed in the Des Moines Register, an Iowa newspaper.
Once the USA has concluded deals with the European Union and Japan - and with the U.K., India and other democracies eager to share in the benefits of the most bilateral-trade-focused government in US history - the democracies will have ring-fenced China and other bad actors, forcing their economies to reform or languish.
In his speech, Pence cited unnamed sources in the U.S. intelligence community claiming that Beijing planned to target state and local governments in the USA and exploit "wedge issues" to advance China's interests.

He warned Beijing that the USA "will not be intimidated" and "will not stand down".
Pence accused China of using its economic power to bully smaller countries and said it had threatened the stability of the Taiwan Strait by pressuring three Latin American countries to sever ties with Taiwan and recognize Beijing.
Pence was also to use the phrase "debt diplomacy" in reference to China's efforts to expand its influence worldwide.
In his speech, Pence said China has built up an "unparalleled surveillance state" that promotes online censorship and can track the populace.
