Surfer dies after contracting deadly brain-eating amoeba

A New Jersey man has died after contracting a brain-eating parasite he was believed to have come into contact with at a wave pool in Texas, according to reports.

The amoeba, called Naegleria fowleri, is typically seen in fresh water. People are usually infected when contaminated water enters the body through the nose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Doctors first thought he was suffering from meningitis, but tests revealed he had Naegleria fowleri the day before his death, when it was too late to treat the infection.

Stabile showed symptoms of the infection after he visited the landlocked BSR Cable Park's Surf Resort in Waco, Texas.

The amoeba is most commonly found in areas of warm freshwater like lakes or hot springs.

It causes the nervous-system infection primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) by traveling up a person's nostrils and into their brain, but can not be transmitted if a person swallows water contaminated with the bug.

Waco-McLennan County Public Health District spokesman Kelly Craine told The Associated Press on Monday that a team from the CDC conducted a range of testing at the facility.

Between 1962 and 2017, there have been 143 known infected individuals reported in the United States - 139 have died, and four have survived.

The infection can not be passed from person to person and typically occurs during the summer months of July, August and September.

He had a keen love for fishing, which led him to work for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and Bass Pro Shops.

BSR Cable Park owner Stuart E. Parsons Jr. told the Waco Tribune-Herald that Stabile had been in the park's wave pool. "The worst-case scenario was unfolding in front of our eyes as we learned that this infection results in a 98% fatality rate", the page continued, sharing mortality figures listed by the CDC.
