Stop Brexit? UK’s Labour Party mulls backing new referendum

Mr Corbyn has long said that a "People's Vote" is not off the table for his party, and a source close to the leadership urged caution over an as-yet unknown motion, repeating the Labour leader's stance that he does not support a second referendum.

He said: "I don't think there's many Tory MPs want a Labour government, but there's many Tory MPs that are very, very angry at the way their government is performing and might feel it is the right time for the country to make a decision on the future". I hope we will agree that the best way of resolving this is a general election.

The Labour leader - a longstanding opponent of the European Union - said he was not calling for a second vote himself but would accept the will of the party. "Some in the party establishment blocked a vote on Brexit last year and they should not be allowed to deny members a say again this year or allow only a vague motion for debate".

He told Sophy Ridge on Sunday: "It seems to me inconceivable that if the Labour Party conference decides that it wants a manifesto pledge on a people's vote that we would defy that decision".

It is not clear where Theresa May goes next, after the drubbing her Chequers proposals received at the European Union summit in Salzburg, but when she says it is a choice between her deal (bravely assuming it is not already a dead parrot) and no deal, Labour would beg to differ.

Britain's opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn gestures as he arrives with Labour Party's Executive Director of Strategy and Communications Seamas Milne (R) to give an interview to the BBC at the Museum of Liverpool on September 23, 2018, the official opening day of the annual Labour Party Conference.

Pro-EU supporters are due to hold a large march as the conference opens on Sunday, calling for a second vote.

Most of Corbyn's MPs and his younger supporters are in favor of the European Union, but many voters in the party's working-class heartlands back Brexit.

He added: 'But I was elected to empower the members of the party.

"He's got as much back bone as a jelly fish!" he said.

Corbyn's words mean that both he and deputy leader Tom Watson have said they would support a People's Vote.

He said: "The proposition being put forward by our leader is something I am prepared to trust".

But shadow chancellor John McDonnell warned on Saturday that a second referendum could stoke racial tensions and far-right populism.

Asked if the country could soon be facing an election, Corbyn replied: "We could be, because this government doesn't seem very strong, it is looking in two directions at the same time, on one hand, a trade deal with the USA, on the other hand, some kind of relationship with Europe". I think there's the real risk of that.

"But I would look at what the question is on offer and I would want to know what the deal is that comes out of the negotiations, if that happens", he added. "That's why I think we now need to take a stand - we the Labour Party and we the country".
