Europe races to 2-0 early lead in Laver Cup

Roger Federer hugged Novak Djokovic on stage during the Laver Cup gala at the Navy Pier ballroom

Chicago - Kevin Anderson and Jack Sock spoiled the doubles debut of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic but Team Europe still led Team World 3-1 after the first day of the 2018 Laver Cup.

Heading into Saturday's match, 14-time grand slam victor Djokovic held a 6-1 career advantage, including a 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7/3) win over Anderson in July at Wimbledon.

Great Britain's Kyle Edmund then secured a 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 victory over the USA's Sock.

It took just three games for Federer to break the Australian in the opening set, but he waited for a shorter period in the second, breaking him at love in his first service game with a masterful combination of play that sent the capacity crowd to rapture.

"That's why we don't play doubles, right?"

Excitement had been building ever since it was announced the former world No 1s would pair up for Team Europe in the competition's second year - with the blue side hoping to take a clean sweep into the weekend after a trio of singles wins earlier in the day.

Team Europe hold a 7-5 lead over Team World before the final day's action at the Laver Cup.

Sock, Nick Kyrgios, John Isner, Tiafoe, Anderson and Schwartzman are representing Team World. The event is named in honour of tennis legend Rod Laver, who won a record 200 singles titles, 11 Grand Slams and five Davis Cups for Australia.

The world No.3 Serb fought back to break Anderson at 5-5 in the second set and served it out to level the score but he but could not get the job done in the third-set tiebreaker.

Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Dimitrov, David Goffin and Edmund make up Team Europe. If the players split sets, they go straight to a 10-point tiebreaker.

Team Europe needs 13 points to retain the trophy.

That prompted vocal protests from Kyrgios, who branded the decision a "shit judgement", while Team World captain John McEnroe tongue-in-cheek commented he hoped the umpire would "get a little present after the match".
