New evacuations ordered in South Carolina as Florence floodwaters rise

Florence death toll jumps to 31 as flooding wreaks havoc - The Jakarta Post

Hurricane Florence is still wearing out the Carolinas, where residents have endured an agonizing week of violent winds, torrential rain, widespread flooding, power outages and death. Preliminary estimates say the storm did $22 billion in damage across the region, which would put Florence among the top 10 costliest storms in USA history.

Entire communities, including housing developments, shopping centers, farms, forests and roads, are completely engulfed by water.

More than 300 people remained Monday at a shelter on the campus of the University of North Carolina in Raleigh, the state capital which escaped the brunt of the storm.

Aerial imagery from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, from an altitude of 2,500 to 5,000 feet, offers zoomed-in views where you can see the specific fields and structures swamped by the storm.

Pig waste often gets flushed into nearby lagoons in the state, and because of the heavy rain and flooding from the tropical storm, 21 such pig-manure lagoons "overtopped" and released that pig waste into the environment, according to numbers released by North Carolina's Department of Environmental Quality today (Sept. 19).

He warned South Carolinians to not drive over roads covered with water.

He said he was confident the state would "build our way out" of what he called possibly the "worst disaster" to hit in its history, with the cooperation of "Team South Carolina" and Trump.

During a packed day, a wind-breaker-clad Trump visited both North and SC, distributed meals at a church, walked amid piles of sodden furniture in damaged neighborhoods, offered hugs and handshakes to residents and discussed the response efforts with local and state officials.

In South Carolina, farmers face damage to cotton, peanut and hemp crops, the state said. An 81-year-old man who was found dead inside a auto in Dillon County after it was swept away by water, was among the victims in SC, the department tweeted on Thursday. So far, twenty-seven people are reported to have died from the storm and the resulting flooding, a dam has failed, a coal ash landfill has collapsed, and millions of chickens and thousands of hogs have drowned. In addition to President Trump's promise of full Federal support to help pay for the estimated $22 billion of damage caused by the hurricane, people nationwide are sending in donations to the nonprofit agencies assisting the storm's victims.

Cooper said Thursday there were 31 storm-related deaths statewide.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the Waccamaw River in Conway, which was already at 13.5 feet above flood level on September 19, and was expected to rise by 1.5 feet a day starting September 20.

The Little Pee Dee has crested in some regions at over 46ft (14m) and its flooding has impacted town water supplies, officials say.

The National Weather Service said the river could reach record flood levels late Saturday or early Sunday, and shelters are open.

How much rain fell where you live? Roads remained unsafe, and some were still being closed as swollen rivers emptied toward the ocean.

North Carolina's hog and other concentrated animal feeding operations, or CAFOs, produce nearly 10 billion gallons of fecal waste a year, according to the Environmental Working Group and Waterkeeper Alliance.
