Sony announces PlayStation Classic microconsole

PlayStation Classic mini retro console is launching in time for Christmas

The original Sony PlayStation console was first introduced in 1994, nearly 25 years ago.

Sony has announced this morning that they will release the PlayStation Classic, a mini PS One which will come with 20 pre-loaded games and be released December 3 priced - roughly - £85.

It seemed inevitable following Nintendo's success with their classic plug-and-play consoles loaded up with the games of yesteryear.

Joining the bandwagon of retro game consoles, Sony has launched the PlayStation Classic. Like the other mini consoles listed above, an AC adapter is not included, so you'll need to bring your own - a smartphone charger or even a smart TV's USB port should provide enough juice to power the device. Sony copies Nintendo and announced today a PlayStation Classic console.

How much is the PlayStation Classic? Regional pricing is $99.99 United States dollars / $129.99 CAN / €99.99 Euro / £89.99 GBP.

United Kingdom pricing for the console has yet to be confirmed, with Sony setting a USA recommended retail price of $99.99 (around £76 excluding taxes) ahead of its launch on December 3rd 2018.

We would imagine we'll hear more information about United Kingdom retailers very soon. Long-time fans will appreciate the nostalgia that comes with rediscovering the games they know and love, while gamers who might be new to the platform can enjoy the groundbreaking PlayStation console experience that started it all. All of those games will be playable in their original format, Sony said.

The box includes two controllers in the original PS1 design - that is, with no Dual Shock vibration and no analog thumbsticks. Also, there is a USB cable.
