Down by six points with just over a minute to play, Cleveland quarterback Tyrod Taylor connected with wide receiver Antonio Callaway for a 47-yard touchdown pass to tie the game.

But those cheers turned to prayers when the game came down to what would have been a tying field goal, but kicker Zane Gonzalez missed again and the Browns lost again. Gonzales missed two field-goal attempts (44 and 52 yards, the latter of which would have tied the score at 21-21 and forced overtime) and two point-after attempts.

The Browns ended their losing streak by tying the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-21 in last week's season opener, but they still haven't won since December 24, 2016.

The Browns flirted with ending their winless streak but lost 21-18 in heartbreaking fashion to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at the Superdome.

Hurricane Florence's weakened category won't make it any less unsafe
Massive power outages were reported , and downtown streets had fallen trees, broken storefront windows and damaged street signs. Myrtle Beach, a SC beach resort, was virtually deserted with empty streets, boarded up storefronts and very little traffic.

New Orleans made a field goal on its next possession to take a 21-18 win. Cleveland was faced with a 4th-and-5 on the New Orleans 47. The backup quarterback, who makes tackles on special teams, ran back a kickoff for the first time in his National Football League career and popped a 47-yard return in the third quarter.

The Browns also will be without starting linebacker Christian Kirksey (shoulder/ankle) and tight end Seth DeValve (hamstring) on Sunday.

Cleveland took a 3-0 lead on a 39-yard field goal by Gonzales with 8:29 to go in the first quarter. As Kindred tackled receiver Ted Ginn Jr., Mitchell knocked the ball loose and recovered the fumble at the Saints' 46 with 10:39 left in the second quarter. First, kicker Wil Lutz kicked a 44-yarder with 21 seconds left to provide the winning margin, bouncing back from missing a 44-yarder in the first half. Brees finished 28 of 35 for 243 yards and two touchdowns, while Taylor completed 22 of 30 for 246 yards and a touchdown.
