More than 1 million people ordered to evacuate path of Hurricane Florence

A storm surge warning has been issued from South Santee River, SC, to Duck, NC, and the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds.

POWERFUL Hurricane Florence was tracking towards the US East Coast Tuesday, prompting authorities to order upwards of one million people to evacuate the path of the extremely risky storm forecasters said could soon intensify. "Now's the time to prepare". It's now predicted to make landfall somewhere north of Wilmington, N.C., before its center heads inland toward the cities of Raleigh and Durham.

Farther north into the Delmarva Peninsula, residents of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and NY and coastal and inland areas should also monitor the storm and prepare in case the forecast shifts to the north and east, officials said.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper expressed concern surrounding the increasing intensity of the storm, and urged residents to make necessary preparations. "People are doing a pretty good job now".

Other hurricanes that have smashed into the Carolinas include Hugo in 1989, Fran in 1996 and Isabel in 2003, according to weather.us meteorologist Ryan Maue.

"We will do what's best for Virginia Tech moving forward as it relates to East Carolina and to the game", Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock said in a Tuesday statement.

"It's not just the coast", Mr Graham said. "We read about their names and their stories, and we want to try to know why they didn't go".

Hurricane and storm-surge watches could be issued as early as Tuesday morning, the NHC said. It will possibly weaken somewhat as it nears land - but that will hardly change the flooding threat.

The storm, which is poised to affect millions this week in the southeastern USA, is "expected to bring life-threatening storm surge and rainfall" to North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, and parts of the Mid-Atlantic states, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. That flooding could be exacerbated by increased wave height from Florence.

In the Pacific, Hurricane Olivia triggered warnings for multiple Hawaiian islands as it blew west towards an arrival over the state as soon as late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

Meanwhile, two other storms were also spinning in the Atlantic.

Before hurricane season ends on November 30, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expects a total of nine to 13 named storms.

It is then forecast to close in on North or SC on Thursday, hitting a stretch of coastline that is vulnerable to rising sea levels due to climate change.

The governor of Hawaii, David Ige, has declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm, the impacts of which will begin to be felt Tuesday night. The hurricane center predicts a "heavy rainfall event, which may extend inland over the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic for hundreds of miles".

"Florence has rapidly intensified into an extremely unsafe hurricane", Blake wrote Monday evening, predicting that the hurricane's top sustained winds would approach the 157 miles per hour (253 kph) threshold for a wost-case Category 5 scenario.

"That's good news and bad news", he said.

Hurricanes Helene and Isaac are not expected to hit the U.S. mainland.

Hurricane Florence has now intensified to category 4, with 130 miles per hour winds.

"Well-built framed homes can sustain severe damage with loss of most of the roof structure and/or some exterior walls". Trees can be snapped or uprooted.

Power companies warned residents may be without power for days or weeks. "Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months".

A slow-moving or stalled storm would also prolong coastal flooding and high wind concerns and may cause significant beach erosion along part of the Southeast and lower mid-Atlantic coasts. That Category 4 storm destroyed 15,000 buildings and killed 19 people in North Carolina.

"This is a serious storm and it's going to effect the entire state", Northam told a news conference. Even inland areas have the potential for Category 1 or 2 storms.
