CDC: STD Rates Skyrocket for Fourth Straight Year

Rates of the four most common STDs- chlamydia gonorrhea and syphilis- increased by 10 percent from 2013 to 2017 marking the fourth record-setting year for the diseases in a row

Cases of three common yet treatable sexually transmitted diseases increased for the fourth consecutive year in 2017, the Center for Disease Control said in a report released Tuesday.

Almost 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis were diagnosed in the United States in 2017, said the Centers CDC.

Experts say there are a number of factors that have caused the spike in STD cases, but many experts point to less frequent condom use as one of the main reasons. It's less clear whether dating apps, like Tinder, have contributed in some way to the spread of STDs, though some researchers think they have.

"We are sliding backward", Jonathan Mermin, the CDC's director for HIV/AIDS, Viral, STD and TB Prevention, said. "We haven't seen anything like this for two decades".

Syphilis diagnoses have spiked by 76 percent since 2013, from 17,375 to 30,644 cases, respectively. "We are in the midst of an absolute STD public health crisis in this country". Forty five percent of those cases were among 15-to 24-year-old females.
