Judge sets bail for adults arrested at New Mexico compound

Various items litter a squalid makeshift living compound in Amalia N.M. on Friday Aug. 10 2018 where five adults were arrested on child abuse charges and remains of a boy were found. The remains which haven't been positively identified may res

The allegations came during a hearing of three women and two men arrested on charges of child abuse after authorities raided their derelict property on August 3. The father was wanted on a warrant from Georgia issued on suspicion of abducting his son.

She set a $20,000 bond for each and ordered that they wear ankle monitors and have weekly contact with their attorneys.

Deputies took 11 children into protective custody and found the body of a 12th child - who has not been officially identified - during the August 3 raid here, just south of the Colorado border.

The five suspects, related as siblings or by marriage, had established a communal living arrangement with their children in the compound and were giving firearms instruction to the children.

Law enforcement has characterized the two men and three women as Muslim extremists and said a child associated with the group had reported that they were preparing to conduct school shootings.

"This was not a camping trip and this was not a simple homesteading, the kind that many people do in New Mexico", Hasson said. In the filth, authorities found shell casings, gun manuals, broken children's toys and books written in Arabic. If anything, the children were trained to protect the compound, Clark said.

Authorities have yet to confirm that the child is indeed dead, but last week, a search uncovered the human remains of a child on the compound.

But a lawyer for one of the defendants said the evidence might be viewed in a different light if the defendants were "white Christians" instead of black Muslims.

The lira was around 6.55 per dollar Tuesday, up 6 percent from the previous day, when the central bank freed up cash for banks. Erdogan warned that the U.S.is putting decades-old alliances at risk and pushing Turkey to seek allies elsewhere.

Mr Clark said he would remain in custody.

"What I've heard here today is troubling. But they look different and they worship differently from the rest of us".

Judge Sarah Backus said although she was concerned by "troubling facts", prosecutors failed to articulate any specific threats to the community.

Court documents named the adults as Lucas Morton and his wife Subjannah Wahhaj, Subjannah's brother Siraj Ibn Wahhaj - who has also been charged with the alleged abduction of his son Abdul-Ghani - and his wife Jany Leveille, and another sister, Hujrah Wahhaj. Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe testified Monday that the remains of a young boy were found inside tunnels that had been dug from inside the compound to an opening 100 feet (30 meters) away.

A 3-year-old boy whose remains were found buried at a New Mexico desert compound died during a ritual to "cast out demonic spirits", other children living there told investigators, a prosecutor said in court on Monday.

Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent Travis Taylor said that according to Ibn Wahhaj's 15-year-old son, one of the adults told him the spirit of the dead three-year-old would return "as Jesus" to direct the group in carrying out violent attacks.

Authorities encountered Siraj Ibn Wahhaj, Leveille and seven of the children last December when they were in a traffic accident, and police found weapons in the vehicle, including pistols, an AR-15 rifle and ammunition magazines, Lovelace said.

He said the children were told that Abdul-ghani would be resurrected as Jesus and "would instruct others on the property about what corrupt institutions to get rid of", in reference to financial and government institutions that might include schools.
