Man held after pedestrians injured in Houses of Parliament vehicle crash

Houses of Parliament crash

A "number of pedestrians" were injured when a vehicle crashed into barriers outside Britain's Houses of Parliament on Tuesday, with armed police swooping in to arrest the driver, Scotland Yard said.

Footage on social media showed heavily armed police response units arriving at the scene, with the area outside the Parliament building in central London cordoned off.

Armed officers could be seen surrounding the auto before leading a man away in handcuffs. Masood then stabbed an unarmed police officer.

Scotland Yard said: "At 07:37hrs today, a vehicle was in collision with barriers outside the Houses of Parliament".

Police say an incident in which a auto was driven into a barrier near the Houses of Parliament appears to be a deliberate act, but the suspect under arrest is not cooperating.

In a tweet, the Metropolitan Police stated that two pedestrians are injured.

"Given that this appears to be a deliberate act, the method, and this being an iconic site, we are treating it as a terrorist incident and the investigation is being led by officers from the Counter Terrorism command".

Two people were injured when a vehicle drove into security barriers outside the British parliament on Tuesday (Aug 14) and the driver was arrested, emergency services said, with counter-terrorism police leading the investigation into the incident.

Barry Williams, a BBC member of staff based at Millbank, said: "I heard lots of screams and turned round".

'I turned around and I saw a silver vehicle driving very fast close to the railings, maybe even on the pavement'.

London's Metropolitan Police say no one is in a life-threatening condition following a vehicle crash outside the Houses of Parliament.

Victor, who was driving a bus when the crash happened, told Sky News: "I stopped the bus because of the crash, and police told us to "move back".

Of the victims, one man has been discharged from the hospital, another woman is still being treated for non-serious injuries and a third person was treated at scene.

The auto crash that occurred early this morning at the Houses of Parliament is being treated as a potential terrorist incident.

"I saw on my right hand side a cyclist injured on the floor", an eyewitness named James told BBC radio.

Basu said "we don't believe this individual was known" to police or Britain's intelligence services.

The area around the crash was closed off, as was a subway station close to the parliament grounds.

The attack left five people dead and around 50 injured, and only ended when police shot Masood dead.

Scotland Yard is treating the collision as a "terrorist incident".

"At 7:37 hrs, a auto was in collision with barriers outside the Houses of Parliament".

Cordons around parliament began to be lifted about six hours after the incident and Westminster Underground station, close to parliament, was reopened.
