Bairstow & Woakes put England in strong position at Lord’s

England bowled India all out for 107 in its first innings on a rain-interrupted second day.

Woakes breezed past his previous Test-best score of 66 and eventually overtook Bairstow.

When bad light forced an early close on the third day, England were 357 for six in reply to India's meagre first-innings 107 - a commanding lead of 250 runs.

"You do not get conditions like that much in England anymore with the ball doing that much in the air or off the pitch".

Jimmy Anderson's figures of five for 20 left him only one wicket away from becoming the first player to take 100 in Tests at Lord's - and only the second to take that many at a single ground, after Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan, who achieved the feat at three separate venues.

With an exuberance tinged with a little awkwardness he punched the air with his bat, like a man playing an exceptionally wristy forehand in tennis, before raising both hands in the air and celebrating towards a dressing room whose delight in his achievement spoke volumes about his standing in this England side.

Kohli had single-handedly made the first test at Edgbaston competitive, his 200 runs failing to save India as England took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series, but he couldn't repeat his heroics on a green wicket at Lord's.

The exit of England " s all-time leading Test run-scorer meant 20-year-old debutant batsman Ollie Pope walked out with the hosts in trouble at 32 for two off 8.2 overs. Five balls later, Ishant came up with a beauty to put his indifferent start behind him as Cook (21) edged one behind to the 'keeper.

On the stroke of lunch, the impressive Shami picked up his second wicket with a ball that kept low and cannoned into Root's pads.

Bairstow received sound support from the correct Woakes, selected after fellow all-rounder Ben Stokes was omitted because of clash with his ongoing trial for affray.

Woakes had already impressed with the ball, dismissing India captain Virat Kohli in taking 2-19 on Friday, but was arguably even more impressive with the bat from number seven.

Bairstow hit eight boundaries and scored freely to keep the pressure on the India bowlers and Woakes also struck eight fours following his two wickets on Friday.
