Stephen Curry: Donald Trump's LeBron James Tweet Racist

A newly-signed petition is calling on President Donald Trump to replace Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos with Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James. He's shown he cares about America's youth and understands the power of public education in helping children meet their true potential.

Since LeBron opened the I Promise school in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, more than 16,000 people have signed the Care2 petition, which asks President Trump to get rid of DeVos in favor of the four-time National Basketball Association champ.

The petitioner knows it's unlikely that James would renounce his playing career to take on this role, especially under Trump - but noted it was at least worth a try to open the eyes of many who have remained blinded by this administration.

Describing DeVos as a "scandal-ridden Republican donor", the petition says "we are stuck with an uncaring Education Chief who has fought against teachers and has even expressed disdain for the very department she heads".

The petition has been signed by almost 8,500 people as of 6 a.m. Thursday.

The petition comes nearly a week after President Trump insulted James' intelligence on Twitter following the athlete's interview with Don Lemon about his new public school.

Don't miss the Perseid meteor shower this weekend
When Can You See the Perseid Meteor Shower? It might take your eyes a little bit to adjust to the darkness, so be patient. The only concern for viewing is wildfire smoke is likely to stay parked over Montana through next week.

The NBA star personally donated millions through his LeBron James Family Foundation, worked to secure sponsorship, and will ultimately have a huge influence on the school program.

This push comes just days after President Trump controversially tweeted Friday suggesting that James isn't smart: "Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon".

Last week, James appeared at a grand opening celebration his I Promise School.

"The coverage made it look like the whole thing is his", said Mark Williamson, spokesman for Akron Public Schools district. We certainly deserve better!

However, there were those that felt James is getting too much credit for his new public school because the majority of the costs will come from taxpayers.
