Hoops coach pleads not guilty in tourist death

This photo from November 28, 2017, shows Wake Forest assistant coach Jamill Jones, second from left, with the team and head coach Danny Manning, second from right, during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game in Winston-Salem, N.C. Police say Jones threw a punch that killed a New York City tourist who knocked on his vehicle window thinking it was his Uber ride.

"The Jones family sends their deepest condolences and sympathies to the Szabo family".

Jones allegedly punched the late tourist, identified as Sabor Szabo, early Sunday after he was being disruptive and banging on cars in Long Island City. Jones, said to have been parked in an SUV that Szabo knocked on, got out and punched him, after which Szabo was taken to a hospital, only to die of his injuries on Tuesday.

A spokesman said Wake Forest had no immediate comment on the 35-year-old Jones' arrest. According to multiple reports, Szabo knocked on multiple auto windows while looking for an Uber. He will be missed but there is comfort knowing he will live on in the many lives he will save through organ donation with "Live On NY".

"We have just been made aware of this matter and we are gathering information", Wake Forest said in a statement released Thursday evening.

According to Jones' biography page on the Wake Forest website, he coached college basketball at Central Florida, Florida Gulf Coast and Virginia Commonwealth before coming to Wake Forest.

It's unclear why Jones was in New York City over the weekend.

Police arrested Jones, of Kernerville, North Carolina, on Thursday and charged him with third-degree assault.
